Most small appliances are made to last no more then 5 years it seems. Having worked in a cooking store for over 6 years, most of our customers that came in to replace small appliances were at that time frame. Many of the gears, motor parts etc. are made of plastic. They don't wear as well or last as long as their predecessors. I can tell you I would not buy anything made by Hamilton Beach. That was the brand we had most problems with and most returns. I have the classic Sunbeam toaster this one from the 50's. It gets used almost every day. It should be out on display on the counter but we have it in the appliance corner thing. I got it at a garage sale many years ago. I suppose it could have sat unused for a number of years, but it is heading on 60 years old.

I have the Sunbeam too. They run a little hotter so the outside of the bread toasts faster and the inside of the bread loses less moisture.
