uffda...possible record flood here...again...

You MAY see Fargo-Moorhead in the news again this spring.

Our modern-day record crest was 40.82' in late March 2009.

"Flood-stage" level is 18', when the Red just gets out of its banks. Problems start @ 35' and up.

NWS personnel, Army-Corps reps, and area leaders had a big meeting earlier this week, and came out with the 1st flood predictions.

It's based on how wet fall soils were, basin snow depths, tribuary levels, water-content equivalents taken from snow-cores all over the area, flyovers, etc.....

RESULT...We may have a BIG problem this spring!

However...It'll be easier because lots of higher permanent diking has been done, drainage ditches protected to higher depths, lots of homes in floodways bought-out and torn down, etc.

Still...the heavy-equipment will be rolling, and sandbagging armies/operations will soon be cranking-up.

I HOPE the spring melt season is slow and even. That will be a HUGE help!

Here's hoping for you. We're facing our own flooding issues. There was a high rain event and early snow melt which caused major flooding in one of the rivers here. I have been spending a lot of time out there touring the damage and helping landowners to get thru the permitting regulations to fix their properties that have been damaged by the floods. I have to go out again tomorrow to an area that a road washed out and the people are cut off, then attend a community meeting on Saturday to let people know what resources are available to them.

Other parts are flooding due to saturated soils. Crazy weather this year!

Oh no. I hope you do get a slow melt. I remember watching the videos of people all pitching in and helping in other years.

Wow...that's a lot to do! What area are you at?
If you've mentioned it b4, I forgot!

Yeah...SO much depends on the melt-rate, and hopefully not much more snow.
SO FAR, they've got odds of us hitting 41' @ ~ 20%. That would be the highest...

EVER.

75 miles to our North, Grand Forks ND had a disastrous flood in '97...some of their levees broke. Fargo barely scraped by (that crest in Fargo was just under 40'). Now, GF/EGF is protected by massive dikes to 62' (Federal/State project!).

So....hopefully...Fargo's diversion plans will get thru congress, etc. Won't help this spring obviously, but the Corps is studying various routes thru/around the metro here.
Price??? Welllll....who knows...I've heard $100 million a few times....
It'll be somewhat like Winnipegs' MASSIVE diversion-channel I guess. Without it, Winnipeg simply wouldn't be there....

Our Red-River is one of the rare ones that flows NORTH!

Faron, I live in Northwest Oregon. The area I'm working in is near the base of Mt Hood, Oregon's highest mountain, also one of our volcanos. We've got a lot of rivers here, and the Sandy is one of the most volatile in Oregon. It really likes to move around, especially since it's fed from snow melt off Mt. Hood.

Here is the most recent article about the area
