Can I please vent???

Ok, here are the three current situtations...the cables for phone, cable, etc come out of the side of our house and are just a mess. Our builder said that the satellite/tv people will put a box on it to cover it up. You can read below what happened there. Then the issue with all our mulch washing away, and last but not least, the lock issue. They first told us to go to Lowe's or somewhere and pick out our door hardware. When we did that and sent them our selections they said those were too expensive and "lowe's isn't really for contractors"...well...that's where they told us to go! So they show us what they normally use, which was fine for interior knobs, but the exterior locks were the lowest safety ratings you could get (i.e. cheap). So we agreed to pay the difference for more secure locks (Schlage). Well the store didn't have the combo lever and deadbolt we wanted and it was cheaper to order the combo online through lowe's so that's what they suggested we do. Now they're acting like it's our fault that they can't figure out how to key the things because we used something different and ordered it online at their suggestion! I think I'm about to go insane...I've already screamed and punched a pillow! Help!!

Me: Direct TV sent a guy out at our request to cover the wires; but he said they do not do that, that it is the contractor's responsibility. I had asked the electrician whenever he was back down, and he said not every satellite company will provide the cover

reply. --- I've never had to put a cover on, we stub the wires out per the contract and the utility companies each put their wires in a box. Cable companies here do it. We have Dish Network and they put our wires in a box. Not sure why Direct is fighting you on this (who knows with them). If we can find some type of box I will be glad to have one put on for you, no problem. Lowes/Home Depot and our electrician do not carry them so I am trying to locate one.

Me: The landscaping beside our front door (in front of the dining room window) has been flooding and washing most of the mulch away and across our sidewalk. We didn't know if maybe putting a metal border or something like that would solve the problem or what normally keeps mulch from washing away..?

Reply:--- With downspouts coming into your beds, large rains will displace mulch without gutter drains. Metal edging generally isn't used next to sidewalks being that the sidewalk itself is the edge. I don't think it would look good, nor do I think it will solve your problem, but I can have it installed if you want. I will have the accordion tube style drains that attach to the bottom of the gutter and go to the edge of the sidewalk installed if you would like.

Me:Any update on the lock situation?

Reply:--- Weve tried everything we know to help you on the lock situation, but so far, no avail. Bob went to Lowes and Home Depot to inquire about the Schlage locks that you guys got off the Internet. They wouldnt even work on the one purchased online since it didnt come from them. The Lowes rep called Schlage and they said that not all locks they make are able to be re keyed with the apparatus provided in the stores. To have them warranty the product you purchased, we can take the lock off for you and you can send it back for a keyable knob. It's something we can't warranty since we did not provide the materials. I really dont know if they would even return it since you purchased a knob that is not able to be rekeyed (another words, they arent even broken, they just arent keyable locks). There is technically nothing wrong with it. You would have to call the company you purchased the knobs from and talk it over with them to see what they would do. Another option would be just to have a locksmith come out and rekey the locks, however this would be an extra expense for you. This is why we cant not warranty or do not purchase items online ourselves it has the potential to be a pain. If we order from our suppliers, we can just return there and have them take care of issues.

Oh no Eyegirlie! I'm very sorry about the issues you are having with your new home. I pray that a resolution is found to each problem soon.

The accordion style drains will work. I had them installed at my last home to divert the water from the downspouts away from my flower beds and mulch. I had rubber mulch, and it was being washed away before attaching the tubes. The brick and paver edging between the beds and the sidewalk did not stop the mulch from washing out.

If it is to any avail, my contractor stated the same reason for not purchasing anything online when we wanted to purchase our entry door online.

Hopefully a resolution will be reached soon so that you can enjoy your new home without the frustration.

Does your contract say you are responsible for buying locksets and having them keyed? Was a brand or quality level specified?

No, nothing specific was mentioned at all about the locks in the contract.
We were perfectly fine with paying to get the nicer locks. It's just frustrating that they can't seem to get them all keyed the same for us, and worse then that, I feel like they turned it around and made it our fault that we picked something they weren't familiar with. They were the ones that first suggested Lowe's and then suggested we order them online.

Schlage now has all their locks set up so that they come with a master key. You put the master key in turn it a 1/8 of turn pull out key. You then put in your new master key. Turn it back and the lock is rekeyed to the new key. It takes ten seconds after you have it made.

That is true of the smart lock schlage locks (or whatever their special name is), but you can still get the regular keyed locks. And, all you have to do is find the number (imprinted on the key), and call your supplier and ask for the lockset they send to match that key code. Then, you are all set.
But, yes, you might have to eat the cost of the one set that you ordered online--depending on the vendor.

Now your starting to see why I always recommend a real lumberyard and not a box store, for the most part they are all a bunch of idiots. Go to a locksmith he can rekey them so they will be keyed alike. It will probably cost you $15.00 each to have it done. Next time try a real lumberyard it may cost you a couple bucks more but when they special order it it will be correct.

Millwork, I agree - we should have done something like that. I usually hate big box stores and should have known better.

We've never had to buy locks before (first house for both of us and def first time building) so lesson learned. Hope someone else can learn from this too!
