Sharp Micro Drawer, Dead @ 18 months.....

So anyone else had their drawer die yet? Mine did, I got about 18 months out of it and from the reviews I'm reading on-line @ consumer affairs it seems that's about par for the course. I'm considering redoing the cabinet to add drawers and put a micro cubby in the bottom of the upper above where it used to be. I can't see paying $1k every 2 years for the drawer and am hugely disappointed as we all loved it. My DW wants to look into repair or replace, I reminded her that the last 2 GE's (1st lasted 10 years) only lasted about 2 years each. We used it a lot, multiple times a day, mostly for heating water, re-heating coffee, softening ice cream/butter and occasionally re-heating left-overs (have a steam oven). Never do popcorn as we like stove top better but did use the defrost function a lot. The tracks didn't fail, the magnetron did.

While that is sad, that your microwave only lasted that long,
reading the reviews on consumer Reports is not the best source of info, regarding the Sharp Microwave Drawer reliability.

You can pick just about any appliance by any manufacturer and read the posts there and you would end up never buying ANY Appliance!!!! Folks with problems and an "AXE to grind" go to that web-site!!!!

Goggle Sharp Microwave Drawer Reviews, to get a better idea of the reliablilty of that appliance. You will usually find reviews on AJMAdison, Best Buy, etc etc.

Then if the reviews are inline with what you found on the Consumer web-site~~~~~Then You may want to come up with a "Plan B"

Myself I have an Electrolux Speed oven, that one poster here claims is made by Sharp. It's still going strong after 8 years and never a service call, except for a loose handle.
And yes we use it a lot as a microwave in addition to using it as a speed oven.

I saw a post about a bad wave guide, (seems like was a Sharp) maybe you had the misfortune to get one of those too?????

I'm sorry to hear your sharp microwave drawer died after such a short time. sorry, but I hope I have better luck than you 'cause it was a fairly hefty investment to warm up dog food and coffee. DH was dead set against getting it.

@gary/dodge - by any chance did you ever create stained glass patterns?

The magnetron in that unit is covered by a 5 year part only warranty. I would definitely look into repair even though you'd have to pay labor. Or if you're handy and can get Sharp to send the part to your house you could do yourself. Considering the microwave drawer is built in and costs what it does I would not treat it as disposable like you would a countertop microwave.

"@gary/dodge - by any chance did you ever create stained glass patterns?"

Well, (not on purpose), anyway. I've probably spilled catsup, mustard~~~~~you name it, on some of our glass tables, over the years~~but nothing "Professional", I assure you.

I should have typed "Consumer Affairs" and not "Consumer Reports" in my previous post~~~sorry about that.

I think at my age, (72), that my typing fingers and the brain are not as "Closely connected", as they were, when I was younger!!

Mine is fine after 3 years. And I paid way less than retail for a refurb unit on ebay.

Yeah, I got a refurbed unit from Home Depot w/a voided warranty so I'm not invested in it as much as if I had paid full retail. However the cabinets were built for it so that's the rub at this point. I'm not that enamored by the whole drawer thing anyway. I personally don't use it that much (steam oven) though the kids and DW do. It's huge unit for a MW and really other than the drawer is just a run 'o' the mill MW.
Dodge59, I'm pretty familiar w/the on-line reviews and read a number of them from many different sources. I have no confidence in this machine or in MW's in general. As I told DW yesterday had I considered our past experiences w/MW's a bit more diligently I think I would have done the cubby thing up-front but was taken by the whole drawer thing, kinda neato. For what I have into the MW repairing is about the same as finding another refurbed unit. I think I'm going to be over ruled on it this time as DW is set on repair however I am going to put contingency plans in place for when it fails again.

mine died in around the one-year mark....just slide into the warranty period.
Display fully died (no response on the key panel). Still had power.
They had to order a new board that sits behind the display. took 1 month for the part to arrive.

    good luck
