Holidays are coming! Need substrate for ornament wreath! Help!

I want to make a shabby chic wreath for my door, using vintage Shiny Brite Xmas ornament bulbs. I see them on eBay for up to $125. I got lucky and found a large bag of just the right colors of vintage ornaments, at my local good will store.

There is one seller on eBay selling MDF wood wreaths, but with shipping I would be spending almost $20. That is out of the question for me. I have scoured the only two craft stores in my area (Michael's and one mom/pop store). NONE have wood wreath rings. Only styrofoam and grapevine. I just don't like the styro and don't think the bulbs would glue on as well on grapevine. Any suggestions? I really wanted to have this project made by next week.

Here is a sample of one I found on eBay. This is what I would like to make.

If you have woodworking/cabinet shop they might help. Maybe they can make one for you out of "scrap" lumber, or check at even Ace Hardware. Look in your yellow pages under woodworks. Basically a wreath, could be just a round circle, or any shape you wish. I think once you start looking you will find what you are looking for. Even your local H.S, or college wood working classes or FHA chapters. It is amazing once a person looks around what ideas they will come up with. good luck

I found a website that carries the MDF boards, which I prefer to use. The site is called 3 ring circles. VERY cheap. I bought a heart shaped one, and a regular 12" round. Under $10 for both, and that includes the shipping. I can't complain there.

Thank you for the M.Stewart link. That is pretty much the process I was going to use, but glueing them down, and on each other, to the side, etc, as opposed to wiring them, as there is no place to attach the wire to the bulbs, that I can see at least.

I can't wait to get started!!!

just wanted to say if all else fails I have used pizza box to cut out rings for wreaths, two glued together are strong and you can spraypaint the cardboard, just a thought

    Hi,

I love her wreaths. I think she uses a regular pine wreath on a wire frame and then hot glues the bulbs on. That is what I would use. I would not use cardboard or foam. I think the pine branches would give the glue some extra grip, ever tired getting hot glue off a pine wreath?. Anyway, you can find them pretty cheap as well.

I use wood subflooring for everything...I think it is called "Luann" (probably misspelled).

It is only 1/4 inch thick and easy to cut. Just make sure you have the right saw blade. One for plywood. Sand just a little.

I think those are beautiful....I'd like to make one out of the even older bulbs....from the earlier 40s. I do have a bunch of them..but they are family ornaments and I don't want to glue them...I've been seeing a lot of repoductions. Maybe I'll give it a try someday.

Luvs...I have painted for years...on everything I could find....After we moved out here into this old barn...there was a lot of spare barn wood I painted santas on...But I don't have anything left of what I painted except one old ironing board.

I also found a stack of old pallets in the back yard that were extremely weathered that I painted santas on. And snowmen.

I don't do crafts to sell anymore...so I don't do a lot of painting anymore. But when I see something I want I still do it. Usually for the garden...I love the garden junk things.

But I might come over to visit with ya'll...not much of an expert to pass on info.

I make mine on 24" or 36" straw wreaths, using velvet ribbon in a base color to cover and then start my process...not one of them is ever the same.
I not only use shiny brites but anything from that era or in the color combo I need, as long as it's glass. I do all my shopping during the spring/summer flea markets,tag/garage/yard sales, thrift stores, antique stores etc... I even now have a network of folks who call me when they have some in that are in good to mint condition.
Right now I'm working on getting up enough white, which I found are from the retro Victorian decorating in the 80's for a completely white on white piece with white marabu. It's already sold...just waiting to find the final pieces.

good luck..here's my favorite one from last year...
