I'm not sure what you are looking for exactly but I took a few pictures of snowmen that I have made. Their hats aren't really grungy but you can do that by coffee staining. If you use a solid the staining would show up easier.

This one is a lightbulb ornament. It just has a toddler sock for the hat. I sewed a small bell on the end.

This is another lightbulb ornament. I took fabric and made sure I had enough to go around the lightbulb and overlap a bit. I glued it together in the back and then I cut strips only partway down the fabric to make the "tassles".

This is an ornament I made from a pudding cup. His hat has a piece of wire big enough to fit around the cup and then I cut strips of fabric and tied them on the wire. Once I had enough to go all the way around the wire, I took another piece of the fabric in a smaller strip and tied it about halfway up the "hat".

This one is about the same idea as the last but I made the snowman light from a (okay I can't remember...is it a rose or ivy bowl?) The strips are all tied on a piece of wire that go around the rim but I just left them hang or stand up for a messy look.

And this one is just a piece of fabric big enough to go around, glued together and another piece of fabric tied around the top.

I saw them some where on the net..and printed it out but there were no instruction with it.

I figured I'd just sew one..the top is kind of wrinkled down...

The whole thing is painted black and I spose they sponge on a little brown to give it the old look...

I can't remember if it had greenery around the bottom but I plan to put some on mine with some red berries..

And I thought I would roll up a piece of the plastic canvas on the inside of the top part to give it some stability.

The paint will help to stiffen it.

Oh..and I picture it to be about 10" high and a circle about as big around as a charger plate.

The one I saw was much like that but it was round on top like a top hat and wider brimmed.

Pattico that is the hat that I saw. I think it is sooo cute. I also like the small brown ones that Trudymom posted. If I could just figure out how to make it...

dont have a pattern but wanted to say, I think the small ones could be made from a brown paper bag (heavy kind) cut out your shape glue together stuff with stuffing, maybe round cardboard to cover the stuffing hole, and as your base spray with flat black spray paint then dust with cinnamon, decorate as you like. The larger one could be made somewhat the same, I would use a oats box, cut material to shape of box sew or glue,leave enought materal so hat would slump stuff top with stuffing, put over oat box for strenth, use brown bag for rim of hat, or stiffen material ,spray with flat black dust with cinnamon, forgot to say you can use fabric stiffening spray before painting to get the hat set how you like, thats just how I would try to make it.
