Any tips for choosing carpet for a runner on maple hardwood stairs?
Comments (3)I really like the color of the hardwood floor in the picture of nnalorac's condo. It is a perfect color for me. I am trying to find the same color in natural maple. But when I get a new sample in a store - it is always very light, almost white and they say that it will get more yellow with time but no guarantees. I have a question - where did you buy your floors? Were they also white when you bought it and if so, how long did you wait before the color changed? Thanks...See MoreKitchen Color Vomit, Selling House...No Words.
Comments (254)I know this is an old thread but for those with a similar dilemma in the future, I just want to chime in with my own anecdote. We recently sold a duplex condo. Our neighbors were also selling at the exact same time. Our condo was slightly smaller and less desirable unit as half the living space was below grade (finished basement). It also had pink kitchen cabinets where the other unit had much more appealing cream cabinets, and our condo had a small deck and the other had a mongo-sized deck. What's more, we had painted the entire house in lively, bold & rich colors. Got a little carried away with it, but it suited us over the years. In fact, the whole house was a riot of color -- yellow, orange, green, and lots of red. Each room was different, in fact, though all the colors did work together. We painted it this way because the condo had a PINK kitchen and PINK marble baths... I hated the pink so much. The color scheme made you not notice the pink so much. I was worried it would turn off buyers and impact our selling price. We debated painting it all neutral before listing it, but our realtor said not to bother, and instead helped us stage it to work with the colors. The realtor did a fantastic job with the staging. Meanwhile the other condo had someone come in and professionally paint the entire place white, and paid for a professional stager as well. We had simultaneous open houses and a lot of traffic. We rec'd 3 offers within a week, all around asking price. We took the one that had no contingencies. The other unit languished for 6 weeks more without a nibble and minimal traffic. They dropped their price. Then finally received a low-ball offer with every contingency you can imagine. We were told by all the realtors that walked through both units that despite ours having less desirable features, it showed far better than the bland all-white, blank-slate unit... which effectively looked like a rental not a home, with all the personality stripped out of it. Ultimately we sold ours for $386/sf and the other unit went for $285/sf with an additional $20,000 cash to the buyers, i.e., we cleared $180K profit and the other unit barely broke even (we'd both bought around the same time). What's more the new owners of our place have not re-painted and don't expect to. You just never know what will appeal to a buyer! Meanwhile on the flip side, the place we bought has a white kitchen and I hate it. It's getting ripped and replaced. There was another identical unit for sale at same time, in which the owner had put in $85K of renovations. We did not care for their renovations so we bought the property that hasn't been touched in 20 years, because we want to do our own renovations....See MoreWhat carpet padding is the best?
Comments (42)Ok, I’ve been in many multi-million dollar houses and everytime I’m in a house like this that has carpet, and when I step on it it’s super super soft and you sink in and it feels incredible on your feet. Carpet feels thick and I know it’s not the carpet, it must be high end padding. SO, my question is, what do all these super expensive houses have carpet that melts under your feel, super nice feel when walking on it? I’m having a area redone in my house and the came to put the padding down last week, the carpet won’t be ready for another 2 weeks. This padding is super super hard, almost as hard as the wood floors before it! My old padding was 20 years old but I took a carpet sample and layed it overtop my old padding and did the same thing with the new padding, and it’s super super hard, not comfortable at all when walking on it. The padding they used was 8lb pad 1/2″ with pet block scotch guard on top. I called the company and asked for who makes the padding and they said scotchguard only makes that top cover that’s on it. Here is picture: https://i.postimg.cc/XJ0PbZRG/IMG-0749.jpg Also, all the other old carpet we have in the house feels soft to walk on, with our old padding in other areas…. (again, why does it seem that houses over 1+ million has super soft padding that feel thick and luxurious)...See MoreHow often do you vacuum/clean floors with a shedding dog?
Comments (101)I have two cats and two dogs. One dog has hair and I've never seen one of his hairs shed. One dog is a yorkiechon and she sheds like crazy. My one cat barely sheds and my kitten sheds like crazy. Coincidentally, my males don't shed, my females do! Anyway, I vacuum twice a day. I have a light weight inexpensive handheld vacuum that does the job well (Moosoo 17k, Pergo flooring & area rugs). It takes me less than 10 minutes to vacuum my entire downstairs level (1800 sq ft home). My animals don't spend a lot of time upstairs so I vacuum upstairs (Shark corded vacuum, builder grade carpeting throughout) 1-2 times per week. I mop every Friday. I'm a SAHM now but even when I did work I vacuumed a lot. I like a clean floor! When I mop I use my O'Cedar mop and bucket. I add 4 oz. of whichever Odoban I have on hand to the water, 8 pumps, mop floors. They dry super fast, my floors are clean, and my house doesn't smell like cats and dogs. :-)...See MoreFishmo
