I would just go to Walmart and buy a $3 all in one remote.

This doesn't happen very often, but the remote receiver inside the tv set may be defective. I have only replaced about 3 in over 40 years. (so, it's rare)

Another possibility is when excess cleaner, such as 'windex' is used to clean the screen. It will run down the face of the picture tube and drip onto the remote receiver and corrode the leads. (this will kill the remote receiver) Another no no is a carbonated drink spill being allowed to run down the face of the picture tube. (very corrosive)

A good test for the remote transmitter is to hold it close to an 'am radio' and press a button (must have good battery), if it's working, you will hear a flutter noise come from the radio.(tune it off station)

Not sure if this will work for your remote or not but worth giving it a shot. Have done this with a few remotes in the past. Remove batteries, hold the power button in for a moment, replace batteries. Suppose to reset remote to factory settings on some units.
