Mic cable is cheap, it's hardly worth screwing around with a DIY..

This cable has to snake through a tight space where the connector cannot feed. It should also have in-wall insulation, which OTS cables do not.

Are both ends of the cable balanced XLR connectors, or is one end an XLR and the other end an unbalanced 1/4" connector?

Both are 3-pin XLR.

Pin 1 should be the shield/ground. While pins 2 and 3 would both typically be shielded, in this case, I would run the white shielded conductor as pin 2 and the other unshielded conductor as pin 3.
