difference between 'idle' and 'standby' on cell phone, please

I purchased a new cell phone- I noticed that even though I hadn't used it and it was fully charged, that the battery went down much faster than my old one. Of course the new one is more of a 'computer', so it will use more battery. But.. what exactly is the difference between 'idle' and 'standby'? It said 48% used standby and 45% used idle. I am not somebody who turns the phone off at night in case someone calls with an emergency, which has happened several times. I do not have apps like 'bt', 'gps' 'wifi' checked- they are only checked if I am usung them because they do drain the battery.

Anyway, could someone please tell me what the difference is idle/standby, and how to lengthen battery life. Thanks
