Pet peeve

OK, I know it's petty, but I'm in my monthly "mood". So just just have to vent. I want to eat ripe fruit! I never get to eat ripe fruit around this house. DH likes all stone fruits (and things like pears, which is what set me off) hard, so they crunch, almost like apples (don't get me started on listening to him eat an apple). So he eats all the fruit before I get a chance to have more than one piece, or if I buy a lot at a time, it gets so soft *nobody* will eat the last few pieces and they get wasted, attract fruit flies, and end up as expensive compost.

I bought 6 pears (I forget what day) and 3 lbs of apples at the end of last week, then on Tuesday I bought a lot of ripe (but not squishy) bananas and 2 different kinds of grapes, over a lb of each, so there was a lot of fruit in this house this week. DS likes apples and red grapes but not green grapes, bananas or pears. DH will eat anything, DD will only eat grapes, I really don't care for bananas. The pears were too hard for me, I had one a couple days ago and wished I had waited. DH ate 3 over the past few days. I had one yesterday, it was perfect (I like to have to slurp with each bite to keep the juice from running down my chin, yes, DH hates to hear me eat fruit too LOL), there was one left, I figured that would be ready today. DH took it for lunch (DS got the last apple)!

Oh well, at least he's heading off on a business trip next week so maybe I can buy some more pears *and eat them when they're ripe!* Until then, grapes will have to do.

OK, vent over - anybody else want to share their secret petty little pet peeve?

LOL! Here's what you need to do. Buy your fruit and the rest for the family. Put your fruit in a bowl and out of the way and tell your family FIRMLY that this is your fruit and not theirs. And if they still don't respect that, get mad and raise a fit! :) Eventually they'll do it.

Oooh, a good juicy Pear sounds delish! And it's almost Watermelon season...I can actually eat a whole watermelon by myself in a week! lol

LOLOLOL! I am sorry but I couldn't even get through the first paragraph without laughing out loud. (I'm going back to read the rest now...)

OK, I'm over it... Maybe you need to keep a secret stash of fruit somewhere?

I can not stand it when people crunch ice. It's like running your finger nail on a chalk board to me.

ajsmama, my husband does the same thing! It drives me crazy. I don't know how he can eat those unripe pears, peaches, etc. The very thought makes my mouth pucker up.

I thought about "hiding" *my* 3 pears but just the thought of having food in the house somewhere other than the kitchen made my skin crawl. Sometimes things attract fruit flies (or worse) as they're ripening. I guess I could stick them in a paper bag and put the bag in the pantry to ripen?

terriks - I'm with you - I think he lets peaches ripen slightly (I don't care for the fuzz), but he definitely crunches nectarines and plums. Who (else) on earth eats crunchy nectarines??? I never get to eat *those* as ripe as I like them either (sigh)...

And yes golddust, hearing him eat an apple (even if it does only take 6 bites) puts my teeth on edge. I have to leave the room and he gets offended. It sounds like a horse eating an apple.

At least your family is eating healthy!

Well, as I have been doing more shopping this week than usual for some reason, here's my big peeve of the week: "Would you like to save 10% today by opening a [insert almost any store's name here] credit card?"

I'm not! (at least not fruit)

ohmygod, I just spewed my ice-tea all over! My husband's eating is driving me nuts!!!!! He read years ago that if you chew all your food 100 times or something, you'll live longer. So guess who is giving it his best shot.... Including things like yogurt, which who knew you could even chew?!??! He doesn't have to worry about living longer, I'm about to shorten his life a whole lot!!!!

Hillarious posts! Dh eats all our bananas ONE day before they're perfectly to my liking.

My pet peeve is hearing people brush their teeth. Ugggh! Makes me crazy. I actually broke up with a guy because he would come out of the bathroom and brush his teeth in the living room while watching TV. So very Seinfeldian of me.

We're on a roll! Though I don't know if this is going to be as funny as the cat in the washer thread...

pesky - does that mean that he eats *all* the bananas in one day LOL? Or just that (like my DH) he eats them regardless of ripeness, finishing the *last* one just before you decide that remaining one is ripe enough for you? Your DH doesn't happen to be one of my DH's brothers?

Oh, and don't get me started with the oral hygiene (no, he doesn't brush outside the bathroom, but he and the kids manage to leave lots of evidence that they're brushing and in DH's case flossing, all over the mirrors and sinks. I asked DS to please rinse his mouth and the sink with water after brushing (he doesn't use a cup like DD, I don't even think he rinses his mouth), he turned to me after rinsing then pouring the rest of a cup of water in the sink and said "There, is that clean enough for you?" I told him he could drop the "for you" since most people wouldn't care to see or clean dried-up toothpaste and bits of food out of their sinks. Guess what his job is going to be once DH and I finish the master bath and the kids have their own?)

Oh, that reminds me, I haven't seen the show, but I did see a commercial - some woman was flossing *in bed*????? At least my DH confines his splatter to the mirror (and sometimes wall).

Ok, call me weird but I stash stuff. In the master closet I have 2 wicker baskets for "extra" snacks - they are on the shelf. My son has a basket in his closet for his snacks and my daughter has her own as well. The main batch of snacks are in the kitchen. Both kids like certain things which is why I buy their own special stuff but everyone likes the stuff I keep in the kitchen. The stuff in my room is the bulk of the sale stuff I buy. Cookies, cereal, oatmeal & chips are too expensive to buy unless I go to target or Walmart or catch a great sale at the food store. I can usually buy 2 or 3 of an item at those places for what I'd pay full price in the food store.

As far as fruit; I don't like apples, but everyone else does. Bananas have to have a slight green tint for me to eat them. Pears are not liked in our house so I have no clue how they should be eaten. Peaches I like juicy. They can't be too soft.

We have a rule - no food in the house except in kitchen (extended to family b/c it's kind of one big room) and eventually (when I get the crown molding off the rug and the junk off the table) the DR. We put snacks in the kids' stockings and their Easter baskets in their rooms since we don't have a mantel but they are not allowed to eat them there. DS had a small gumball machine in his room and when we gave away his old bed I found multiple pieces of gum stuck on the back of his headboard. So no food in the bedrooms. You've seen my kids' rooms - can you imagine food up there in that mess??

(I don't care for the fuzz)

Me too! I always peel my peaches. Of course my husband laughs at me for that.

I also don't like brushing or flossing outside of the bathroom. In fact it is only in recent years that I could bring myself to floss in front of my husband - and we've been married for 26 years!

Pesky, you would have divorced my husband with a quickness. He somehow got the idea that the longer you brush your teeth the better so he literally strolls around the house working that brush for 3-5-10 minutes at a time. You haven't lived till you have a 6'5" fellow foaming at the mouth in your living room on a nightly basis.

What is not so humorous is that he also had a dentist phobia for years and came VERY close to losing all those perfectly brushed teeth due to advanced periodontal disease!

    Go figure...

    Ann

I didn't realize that toothbrushing usually happens in the bathroom. Here's DS, brushing his teeth in the living room. (I thought this was normal.)

    SSSSSSHHHHHHHUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDDEEEEEERRRRRRR!!!!

But you do have a cute son there, Golddust.

Running: maybe by brushing for so long, your hubbie is actually ruining his teeth. A few years back, my dentist told my I was brushing too hard and ruining my gums. Sometimes longer is not better, LOL

If you don't like peach fuzz, eat nectarines. Same taste, no fuzz.

I have 2 pet peeves. The first is how magazines start sending renewal letters, often with veiled threats about how they are going to cut you off unless you respond ASAP, and when you check you still have 10 months remaining on the subscription. They could reduce the cost of the magazine by at least a $1 per issue if they stopped spending so much on the multiple, multiple requests for renewals months and months in advance.

My 2nd peeve is my SIL's obsession with weather and weather related talk. It is never hot or sunny enough for her. I saw her Thurs evening around 6 pm, it was 80 degrees, sunny & breezy - very unusual for spring in PA. The weather was expected to return to more seasonal lower temps & some rain the next day. She was sitting inside watching the soap opera channel. I asked why aren't you outside enjoying the beautiful evening? She said it's too windy and it's not hot enough. What?! I'd rather cut the lawn with a nail trimmer than watch TV on a beautiful evening.
Another time she was showing us vacation pics, complaining about how bad the weather was. My DH said "then why is the sun shining in every picture?" According to her, it was sunny every morning & early afternoon, but by the time she was able to sit on the beach or by the pool it was cloudy. Hmm, why not sit by the pool early each day & then do the other stuff later? No, instead she complains about how bad the weather is/was/will be.

My DH eats all of the chocolate chips that I use for baking and making chocolate chip pancakes on Sunday mornings, and he doesn't tell me so I end up having none when I really need them. He also has the fastest metabolism of anyone I've ever known so the chocolate chips don't instantly add 5 pounds to his belly and hips like they would if I ate them - another pet peeve.

Oh yes, in general my DH finishes something and then doesn't tell me, I don't check the linen closet, the pantry, and the fridge every time b4 I go shopping (try to go when DD is in AM kindergarten so often just fly out of here after the bus leaves so I can be back when she is). Sooo many times I've gotten back from the store, putting things away, only to find that we are out of cheese, baby carrots, Bisquick, whatever. I *do* manage to keep up more or less (err on the side of having too much) with paper products since DH will not go to the linen closet to get more TP unless every shred runs out on *him*. He will not replace it (not even when spare is in the rack under the roll, worse, if there is none in the rack) for the next person. But 6-yr old DD will.

I was in JCP yesterday, bought DD some clearance sweatpants after a birthday party at Build A Bear, they asked me about opening JCP account and I almost laughed remembering this thread! Yes, that does get annoying (as does every time I go into Job Lot and the cashier asks if I want to sign up for email coupons, I already get them but sometimes am not interested in the coupon items, or I print the things and then forget to bring them with me! I told them they need a loyalty card, though I really don't need 1 more card to carry in my wallet).

Oh, goodness, about the magazines, yes, RD is the worst for that!

I have another one - not just telemarketers (and lately, political surveys), but the other day the manufacturer of the TV we bought for Xmas *called* - not for a warranty issue, but to ask if we wanted to extend the 1-yr warranty! Come on, it's not even 4 months old! I told them I bought it with Mastercard and bank said they give automatic extension of warranty. Sears calls all the time about extending our appliance warranties, but this is the 1st time I've had a manufacturer call! Maybe b/c we bought it directly off their website through employee benefit plan?

Hmmmnnnn...pet peeves? Yes, I have a few...and they are definitely petty:

#1) "Empties" that are left for me to throw away.
Seriously, am I the only person in my family who can walk 2 feet to the trash can and dispose of junk mail and empty envelopes? What about empty food boxes from the pantry, empty bags on the counters, one tablespoon of milk left in the jug, not to mention the lone, shriveled lemon hiding in plain sight smack in the middle of the refrigerator? Also, DH cannot commit to throw away dead batteries from remotes because "they might still have some life in them"--so they sit on the counter too. (Perhaps my beef is actually with horizontal surfaces!?)

    #2) DH's hard walking.
    Quit STOMPING everywhere dammit!

    #3) "This was Annie Leibovitz's"
If I hear this again I will be switching the TV off. Hey HGTV, it's not like she WANTED to move! Shut up already.

    OK, that's my 3 petty-peeves for today :)

Here's my pet peeve rant, although it's kind of gross:

Please, if you make a mess in the toliet, on the toliet, on the seat of the toliet, on the rim of the toliet bowl or anywhere around the toliet, PLEASE CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS. The lysol wipes and the toliet brush are RIGHT THERE for your convenience. Stop leaving it for me to rush in and have to clean before I sit while doing the little potty dance. Obviously, TMI, but I'm cranky and this is my biggest pet peeve. Many dream about two sinks in the master bath. Me, I dream about two toliets.

Others include: finding folded clean laundry in the dirty laundry pile. I already cleaned this, why is it back? If it doesn't fit you any more, tell me. Do not automatically assume that I can read your mind or your current shirt size.

Finding dirty dishes in the sink when the dishwasher is dirty. Yes you CAN tell if the dishwasher is clean or dirty. Open it up and LOOK. It's usually quite obvious to someone with half a brain. I know you have at least half a brain b/c you keep coming home with honor roll grades from school. If you are smart enough to get straight A's, then you can tell if the dishwasher is clean or dirty.

Ok, end of ranting for today.

oh yes. Pet peeves.. literally. My beagle, Baxter. Sits and whimpers and whines to go out. If I ignore it, the whine is accompanied by a big sigh. So I drop what I'm doing to take him outside. And he circles and circles and stops dead to look at 'something' he thinks he sees or hears. And deciding nothing is there, he circles and circles again. Begins to squat.. changes his mind, and heads to another suitable spot. Circles and circles, stops and stares into the distance. Forgets why we're out there. I remember, however, so I insist he get down to business and I tell him 'g'boy, Bax. C'mon, Bax. Hurry up, Baxter. Baxter! Wouldja comeON already!".

The time it takes him to get down to business is directly related to how cold/late/rainy/windy it is outside. If there is a blizzard or monsoon, we will be out there forever. You can bet on it. And right this minute? He is beyond whining and whimpering and sighing. He is barking at me. lol. Gotta go....

Oh juddgirl!!! I JUST had this conversation with my DH on Sunday morning! My four year-old asked for chocolate chip pancakes. Of course I said, "Sure," knowing that I had all the ingredients. So, I start getting everything together and cannot find the chocolate chips! I asked my husband if he had seen them and he was a little hesitant. Finally, he says he might have eaten them. Immediately I said, "No, no, you couldn't have eaten these, I just bought them two or three weeks ago and they weren't even opened as far as I can remember. I just have to find them." THEN he (hesitantly, again) admits that he's pretty sure he ATE THE WHOLE BAG over a course of a week or so!!! Are you KIDDING me!?! Really, I tell him I'll buy him some chocolate bars. He doesn't want them. I swear he somehow feels less guilty about binging on the chocolate chips! UGH!

As far as my OTHER pet peeve, well...

My latest pet peeve is my son washing his hands at the kitchen sink. I would prefer that he wash his hands in the bathroom but that's not the thing that bugs me the most. He's all about conserving water so when he washes his hands he adds a tiny bit of water and soap then turns off the water. Then I have to hear loud squishing and smacking and slurping while he's moving his hands. It makes me want to scream!
