48 inch wide dining table

Is 48" too wide for a dining room table? It is 72" long, 120" with four 12" leaves.

    No.

A table can be any size you want.

48" is a good width on a table that expands out to 120".

The key to spec'ing table width is to size it to the room, allowing a minimum of 24" "swing space" for people to push-back their chairs. That means in your instance, you need to have a MINIMUM of 8' across the room before encountering a wall or sideboard, hutch, etc.

I rarely build custom tables for customers beyond 48" however, as that's close to the maximum distance that people sitting down - across from one another - can pass plates/dishes to without having to stand up.

60" round and square tables are pretty popular now, they seem to work well enough for the people that buy them. We built a kitchen table 60" x 120" for a customer last year. Granted, his kitchen is at least 700 sq ft, but he liked it so much he wants us to make him a dining table the same size.

48" is normally the standard width you are getting on tables that measure or go up to 120" I think the question will be if its stable enough with the leafs and secondly, is the 48" a size you can work with in your house. I think it is the perfect size for the table you described.

My table is 48" wide x 62" long oval. It also has 2 20" leaves. I love its proportions visually. However, it does sometimes feel less than intimate with a small group.

also, take into consideration tablecloth size. Oversize tablecloths are hard to find.

    Here's a chart:
    ..
    table size: 28"x46" to 40"x58", seats 4 to 6, tablecloth size: 52"x70"
    ..
    36"x60" to 48"x72", seats6 to 8, 60"x84" tablecloth
    ..
    36"x78" to 48"x90" , seats 8 to 10, 60"x102" tablecloth
    ..
    36"x96" to 48"x108", seats 12 to 14, 60"x120" tablecloth
    ..
Based on this chart, I'd say 48" is the largest commom width, and that larger is going to be hard to find a tablecloth to fit nicely.

Also, a 120" length is going to pose a challenge if you want a tablecloth on it.

Where can I purchase tablecloths for a 48 inch wide table?

Tuesday Morning if you have one nearby. I just bought a 70"X168" beautiful damask for 34.99. They have lots of oversize of excellent quality. The internet prices are very high for oversize tablecloths. Good luck.
