Dried Grout Color

Our tile is down and grouted. I insisted on them waiting 24 hours after laying the last tile before grouting. They were very accommodating with my request. Then, we left town for a week the morning after the grouting was finished. Grouting was all done at the same time.

Now that we are back and I look at the grouting, the grout color REALLY varies - in some areas more than others, but it is all over the entire floor. The grout goes from cream to almost a soft rust color with very quick transitions.

I feel certain the grout has had time to completely dry. I felt they did a good job of getting thinset dug out beneath the grout, too, so the thickness of the grout was consistent.

Is this normal? They used two bags of grout and mixed them so they would "match". Both bags were the same color. In fact, I have slightly over a half bag left of each bag, so they didn't even need to open a second bag, but did so to assure even color. They used Keracolor S by Mapei.

I've not noticed variation in grout color before in tile jobs. I called the installer and he said to wash it down with a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water as sometimes dust or loose grout will settle and cause discoloration. I cleaned the tile and grout with the solution last night. (Should I have rinsed with clear water?)

It is now dry and the color variation remains. The installer said they would have to call in a rep to check it out if washing didn't even the coloring. Of course, this will take a few days to schedule and get someone out to look at the job. I don't need more delays! Is this common and I've just not paid that much attention? Is there something more I can do to even the color short of dying it, so as not to delay sealing the grout and moving forward? Or should I be calling again and waiting on a rep to come give his opinion? It looks very "odd" to me. I could live with it, but it just doesn't look right.

This forum is quiet the last few days. I thought I would follow up with where things stand. I called the dealer yesterday afternoon and he said it "should" be dry enough to be even in color by now, but since they recommend waiting 21 days before sealing the grout, he wants to wait another week. If there is no improvement by then, he wants to come out with a company rep and take a look. He said if it wasn't even, they would probably stain the grout the lighter color is is supposed to be. He is also checking with the installer to see if there is something more that I might do between now and then to even the coloring naturally.

I'll let you know how things turn out. I checked the two bags of grout. They were labeled as the same color, but were two different dye lot numbers. Perhaps it was not mixed as well as they thought. I feel certain the company will make things right. They have been great to work with.
