Don't apply any topcoats to your table, just placemats should do it, and remember NO HOT DISHES on the table surface without proper trivet underneath them. Moisture will not hurt a modern table finish so you can skip the coasters

Use stickon sliders or felt (I prefer felt) on the chair legs. You'll need to replace them about every 6 months. Do not nail anything into the leg as it can cause a split/fracture down the road.

I made a big mistake!

I have a fairly new dinning room set. The table is big and has an inlayed look to it to make a beautiful design. I noticed it was very easy to scratch and under the scratch was a white wood. I proceeded to put a semi gloss poly on it and I think I ruined it. What should I do now? Is there anything I can use to remove the poly coat I put on? All I wanted to do is put a hard portective glass coat on.
Please help and I love my table!

Sorry, you don't have an easy fix. Removing cured polyurethane is quite a chore, there are some chemical strippers that even have a hard time dissolving it. You would have to do a complete finish strip to the table, or have it scraped/sanded. Either way, an expensive endeavor.
