Sears 1/3HP Opener Problem

I've seen a couple of similar posts, but nothing specific to what I'm seeing, so here goes:

* Sears 1/3HP Chain drive opener... it's old

* No sensors

Problem: Push the button, moves a few inches and stops. This happens when it's going up or down. If i disconnect the door, i can move it freely, lift it up and down with my pinky so I'm sure it's not jamming. There are no lights that blink when it stops. Is there anything I can check besides disconnecting the switch wires and seeing what happens with the remote, or just shorting the terminals on the unit?

Remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. Sounds like it may be stripped. If so the part number is 41A2817 and is available at any good door opener service company. It comes with a set of instructions.
