Asbestos is no longer incorporated into any flooring product. I don't know what you mean by 'banned' in your post.

It is unlikely that there is any ACM (asbestos containing material) in a house built in 1998.

asbestos was banned (outlawed via federal legislation - EPA enforced under the Toxic Substances Control Act) in manufacturing in 1977-1978, and was banned from sales, distribution, and installations in 1979-1980.

A house built in 1998 would not contain any asbestos unless the builder broke alot of laws and used asbestos containing materials they saved for 20 years.

Hi- thanks for the posts. While I doubt there is any asbestos in the house, from what I have read it really is not banned. The 1989 ban was overturned, so a few things still are, but many are not. See this link-- am I missing something?

Interesting about vinyl asbestos floor tile in that article. However, I doubt very much that any flooring manufacturer will take the risk, or will their insurers, of incorporating the mineral fiber in vinyl composition floor tile.

Missy123 did you end up testing your tile? Also I've heard cement underneath the tile as well as grout could also contain asbestos. I also removed the tiles from the basement of my house built in 1999, and am now worried about asbestos.

I was in the asbestos industry for over 20 years. I would be dumbfounded if any American products contained asbestos today, or even from 25 years ago. I'm not saying it can't happen, but I will make a bold statement to say there are no consumer products with asbestos in then today.
