Dry climate, except when its not

I am going to install solid or engineered hardwood floors in my new house in Lake Tahoe. The companies that primarily sell engineered wood say to install engineered because it is more stable. They claim that solid hardwood will ultimately warp because our humidities can be less than 10 percent for a month or more and then the next month be higher than 60 percent for a couple months.

So then I talk to a guy who installs solid wood. He said go with oak because it is stable and then he went on to say that engineered wood will crack after a couple of years because of how dry and hot it gets here in the summer.

I have two kids a labrador retriever and I am a forester. It bothers me to have clean kids at the end of the day. We are going to be very tough on anything we get.

Help!
