Can I grill inside?

I don't grill outside. DH has a smoker and will grill/smoke foods on the weekends but I don't like asking him to cook during the week after he has worked 10 hours! I'm not that savvy in the kitchen and I'm wondering if I can 'grill' on a grill pan on the gas stove top?

Of course, I don't have a grill pan so I need advice on what kind to buy, also!

Thanks,

Necia

I use a cast iron grill pan, Creuset ; I assume that you have a strong vent hood
since you have gas. Maybe DH could turn on his grill for you and you could learn to use it ? he could relax with a beer while you flip the steaks, lol.....

Is it a gas grill or charcoal? We only have charcoal and I'd never have the patience to prepare it for grilling like dh does.

I have a grill skillet, but only use it to roast chickens.

Mitch is right ... a good vent hood would be a necessity.

Please don't use a gas or charcoal grill indoors. There is a carbon monoxide hazard.

Use a grill pan with your stove or look into getting an electric grill.

Here is a link that might be useful: carbon monoxide danger from grilling indoors.

Awm, she's not talking about using a charcoal or gas grill indoors.

Good warning awm, but I don't think that anyone was suggesting using the gas or charcoal grill indoors. I think that it was just suggested that necia could probably learn to use the outdoor grill or use a grill pan on the stove top inside.

I bought an All Clad grill pan and use it quite often for making burgers, chicken or even steaks inside when I don't feel like firing up the grill. We have a gas grill which makes things very easy, but still, I have to walk allll theee waayy outside and take the cover off etc... :-)

I found the key is to get the grill pan nice and hot so you get the pretty grill marks. I do have a good vent hood, but open the window, you'll only be grilling for 10 minutes or so. It's no different than frying some burgers in a regular frying pan, they'll just taste a tad better!

Thanks for everyone's input! Our grill outside is one of those big smokers, but DH does use it to charcoal/grill on. I don't think I would have the patience to get the fire to the right temp., etc, either!

I will look into the creuset grill pans. I would mainly only be cooking burgers, fish, shrimp or veggies on it. It would be good for paninis, too!

Let us know how you like it. I've never used a grill pan. I love grilling (although hubby does it a good bit of the time), and to me it's no problem getting the grill ready, etc.

There are some inexpensive electric indoor/outdoor grills (real grill where juices fall onto lava rocks below then smoke up, not the George Foreman contact grills that yield food that looks grilled but doesn't taste it). You can plop these on your cooktop, or on a 2' x 2' board placed over your cooktop. The important key though is a high-CFM overhead range hood that ducts to the outdoors, rather than just running air through a charcoal filter and recirculating air back into the kitchen. A nearby exhaust fan (usually along the back wall of the kitchen) will work too. Best, of course, is a proper built-in indoor grill appliance and a suitable ventilator.
