murphy beds

I am looking to take a spare bedroom that we use for an office/craft room and add a bed for stay over guests. We do not have this happen frequently but would like to have the option of having family/friends stay over and provide them a place(other than the living room sofa). The room of course already does double duty and space is at a premium. I was thinking about installing a murphy bed. Has anyone had experience with them and if so what type and company have you used? Anything I should be considering before decidng? Any problems? Thanks.

We have had a murphy bed for 11 years. We have moved it 3 times. We are in the process of buying another one for our vacation home. You want to use a company that uses SICO Eurobed hardware.

The bed mechanism pivots on a steel support plate attached to the inside of the cabinet, it is not floor mounted. The cabinetry is secured to the wall anchoring the wallbed system. Because the unit is not floor mounted, it allows the unit to be relocated much more easily.

For safety and visual aesthetics, the SICO Eurobed features an exclusive hidden spring mechanism that makes raising and lowering the bed almost effortless. This is much easier than attempting to fold and unfold a sofa bed. The murphy bed doesn't need to be remade each time it is stowed away unlike a sofa bed.

SICO's fold-over leg provides a solid support for the bed when in use, and secures the mattress in place when the bed is raised into the cabinet. Steam-bent laminated hardwood slats adjust to the body's contour for optimum comfort and support. The slats will not sag or wear out with either time or use.

They are about $1,800 and up depending on the style and cabinetry you choose. Contact SICO Incorporated and they will put you in touch with a dealer near you.

    I hope this helps.

Modern Murphy beds can be elegant furniture pieces or just a bed to fit into the wall or a cabinet. These wall beds can be lifted up easily and are excellent for people with small rooms, one room or want to use a guest room. Wall beds are also good choice for dormitories, hospitals, firehouses and hotels.

Wow, my parents just put one in last month and spent over $6,000 but that included the cabinets on the sides and the mattress as well. They live north of Boston so maybe that is why the price was so high. Anyhow, they love it.
