Another CL thread

I am furnishing a new house and am spending hours on Craigslist these days. You certainly get a sense of how differently people value things. I recently bought a 50 year old 9x14 Tabriz rug for $100 and just now a sad looking old hutch for $40. And then there is this:

4 PEICE ANTIQUE CANAPY BEDROOM SET - $1200

Been in family over 40 years and still Looks New. 4 Peice's Canapy Bed, Tall Dresser , Dresser with Mirror, and Night Stand. Night Stand has a water stain from glass, other than that the set is perfact. We are moving in 1 week and giving this set away for $1,200.00 Hurry,Don't miss out.

It is a twin bed and average looking bedroom pieces that generally price for about $50 each.

And what is it about the people who ask you to e-mail them and they will send you photos? Post the photo in the ad, for goodness sakes.

And the people who set a date by which it must be sold - what's that about? I'm sorry you have to sell this in a week, but that's not going to change my decision to purchase it. But if I'm going to buy it, I'm going to low ball you.

    I hear you.

This post I have linked is my all time favorite. It's been running for ages and, as Dlm2000 can attest to, it's become an obsession of mine.

People have even suggested that it might be code for some nefarious business. Who knows.

I've even remembered to misspell Ethan Allen when I'm doing a search for it.

Great job on the rug find!

I like how $7000 is his final offer but in his ad he has the furniture listed at $6500.

OK, I'm no genius, but the furniture is 2-3 years old and needs to be reupholstered due to their animals? I'm picturing full-grown lions and tigers and bears or something. Mmmmm, probably smells good, too!

Do you think he wants the $7,000 PLUS the bass boat for the $6,500 furniture? I can't imagine why no-one's snapped it up already. The word d-i-v-o-r-c-e comes to mind. Whatta guy!

Oh, Parma, I see why that ad, constantly re-appearing, would become an obsession. There is a ceramic bunny rabbit selling on my craigslist that has become my obsession. The asking price was $5.00, now it is down to $3.00, but she will meet you somewhere for $5.00.

And have you looked at the Wanted ads? Some sad stories out there.

    Here's one I found today.

They want to sell a 'painting' from Kirklands and give you a "firm" 25% off list.

That place has loads of half-off sales, coupled with extra 25% coupons.

It's just about impossible to find any real art on CL.

As for the sad stories--if even half of them are true, it is just heartbreaking.

I know - I saw a set of 3 tables from local (hi-end solid wood, if you like country look) manufacturer on CL for about 33% of new price, seller didn't post pic but I emailed and he sent me this link (actually, sent wrong link 1st time, he must be selling DR set too). It took me *4* more emails to get the actual style (3 different styles of end tables shown on page) and the stain color from him. Fifth email I told him DH said looked promising, could I get address and time to go look. He said they own digital camera "but due to time consdtraints we have used the (manufacturer) website to present the furniture."

What about all the time we've spent emailing back and forth? I think he doesn't want to send pics b/c the set is trashed. But we may take a look Friday night b4 his yard sale Sat in case it's in good shape, don't want it to go at yard sale. I'm sure no one else has responded to his ad (or even if they did, haven't gone to the trouble to pry the info out of him like I did).

Some people have a hard time negotiating any photo posting besides the "attach" feature in their email. That's why the ad says "Will email photos on request". It's annoying, but that's pretty much why. And there are so many people out there telling others that they should only mark their stuff down to like 40% of retail or similar, and they don't take into consideration that that might be Before they use it for 7 years!
Also, I find that many people just don't have any idea how to frame a clear answer to a question. In my day job, at a bank, sometimes it just takes way too long to pry out of a client what they want.
In the olden days, Before Craigslist put ads right out there on your computer, complete with picture.........you had to call an ad in the newspaper and wrangle a date to meet over the phone. And since people were still people, they may tell you the bookcase was solid wood, maybe walnut, 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide, excellent condition. After you drove 10 miles to their house with it's junkyard look in the front, you were ushered into a side room where the 5' tall, 3' wide, Particle Board bookcase sits. Then, you had to decide whether to just be kind and tell them it's not what you're looking for............Or kindly tell them that it's not wood, and not 7' tall. At least on CL, you have a better shot at seeing what you saw in the ad.

parma- well it got the better of me and I just had to see a picture of the infamous couch and yes I emailed and she sent them.

I feel like bleaching my eyes just from looking at it, yuck.

Animals? Well they have cat figurines in the background and dog crates in the pics but I don't think it was either that caused damage.

It has extensive damage and looks like it may have been stored and ruined in storage- looks like heat, water, mice damage.

She did let me know it would only cost a couple of thousand to recover. That's all, whew! Even if she posted it in the free category- there is no way.

Our CL site bites here, small town, lots of junk, high prices. My favorites are the "antiques" that are rare.

    That is just unbelievable.

More and more people were buying into the thought that the ad *had* to be code for something.

    I'm speechless.

Well, maybe my obsession can finally come to an end.

As late as June 29, (and for the better part of a year) the people had their cr*p listed for $6,500. Today, inexplicably, they lowered it to $600-$1,000.

Still don't know where they are going to find a buyer.
