Engineered flooring mess...

In the home i've built, Mannington scraped flooring was installed. However, when the touch up painting was done, there were several areas where dripped paint was casually wiped up, obviously without water. This type of floor has deeper graining and is heavily distressed. The flooring store sent out a crew to clean up the mess and things went from bad to worse! Now nearly ALL the graining, as well as the entire floor(3 rooms!!)is filled with a white substance.

I'm beginning to think a paste wax was used, since I went to the house one day and they were buffing it. Does anyone have a clue how this 'foreign substance' can be cleaned off the floor, especially out of the graining and 'dibits'?

I received an email from the building supervisor today, and he said it might be a good idea to re-stain and re-seal the floor. I don't like this idea since the floor has a 15 year warrantee on the finish, and this will make it void. I'm also concerned about the sealer(poly?)wearing off, especially in the kitchen, making 'low-lights' on the floor.

The only other alternative is to rip it out and start all over again, at the builders expense, of course. The only problem with that is the mouldings will get banged up, and then i'll have another problem to deal with. I don't want their painters back in the house since they were the start of what is slowly turning ito a soap opera! What would YOU do? HELP!!

No one can offfer me any advice to this dilema?

Advise?? I just thought you were ranting, blowing off steam.

What advise can I offer in that situation.

Sorry floorguy, it was a rant with a question~is there a good cleaner that will remove whatever might be on the floor?

*That* situation? You mean the so-called rant or the floor problem? Yes, i'm upset because they're had over a month do take care of the problem. I'm trying to avoid having the floors re-done cause I know it will just set off other problems. Dented up baseboards, nicked paint, etc., etc. I believe it was the painters that set the ball in motion, and I do NOT want them back in the house.

So, do you have any suggestions? TIA ;o)

If you are concerned that resanding and refinishing will blow the warranty, then I see that you have no choice but to have the flooring replaced. Take off the moldings so they don't get dented.

You might want to call the manufacturer and question them about ways to remove different finishes from their product. If it is paste wax, naptha or mineral spirits might be an option, but they will have to be applied CAREFULLY by hand.

Lynn, thank you for understanding and your sympathy of my plight. Everything had been going so smoothy, then BAM!! Should I say it was too good to last?

Patster, he's NOT talking removing the original stain/poly, but going over it. The mineral spirits has already been tried, but didn't work, that's why i've suggested trying a wood cleaner, made for wood floors. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

My own feeling is that this just isn't acceptable! The "fixes" all have problems--I think your builder should start all over, replacing the flooring (and baseboards, etc.). In other words, he should do it right.
