A nightmare to end all nightmares!

I am currently removing all wall to wall carpeting in my home.I have beautiful oak hardwood flooring underneath all of them. This house is 40 years old. The nightmare is happening in one of the bedrooms , the padding that was used back in the day , 20 years ago,was a rubber based blue ripple pad. Now that blue rubber substance has become a solid mass that is stuck to the oak flooring . There are no more ripples,it is like cement. I have been using a hair dryer to heat up a small section at a time and scrape it off with a putty knife. It is going to take a long long time to get this stuff off the floor. Anybody have an experience with such a horrific problem I would love to hear from you.
