I'm no expert, but the first idea that came to mind was to use some sort of strong stripping solvent, like you'd use to strip paint or varnish. The more skulls and crossbones on the can, the better. The stronger ones should melt away any rubber and plastic, and underlying finish, leaving you with a beautiful bare wood floor that you can sand and refinish.

That was very bad advise if you plan on having a finish stick top it without debonding!!!

If you use chemicals, you need to have the ability to flood the area to thoroughly rinse the chemicals.

One you can't flood wood flooring or it will swell.
Two, chemicals will soak into the wood after it also removes the finish, that is on it.

A drum sander with coarse paper will eat the rubber for lunch, then continue the grit sequence, and then finish.

Just another thought if you want to go the hair dryer route is to get one of those hand held heat blowers that look like the hair dryers from a construction store. Forgot what they are called at the moment. They work just like a hair dryer on steroids so that should move your heating a scraping along a little faster. Use caution as these can blow some serious hot air that can cause a fire.

Just had to let you know I got the job done. It really wasn't that bad at all. I did stick with the hair dryer
and was surprised that the areas of the room that were not in heavy traffic area came up very nicely.
