I have had some pretty bad experiences with contractors myself. One forged lien documents; a GC said the Corian fabricator was certified and found out later he was a rough-in carpenter; when we built our home, a doorway was put in the wrong place & there were laughable excuses; and the stories go on and on..... Many have such egos that when you correct them as a lay person they become rude & defensive.

You should be proud of yourself for being so astute to be able to figure out the issue as a non-tiler. And, ignore his pathetic comments about you being anxious...that is simply his way of deflecting attention from his errors.

I have found that the "delivery" of the news is important when telling any contractor that he's made a mistake. Consider them fragile little girls (lol). You seriously have to couch the news so that you are not accusing them of a gross malfeasance but trying to figure out what might have gone wrong. I have discovered the hard way that sometimes you have jumped to the wrong conclusion and that will lessen the impact of any other problems you find because you already have been wrong before (not your situation).

Lately, I have been lucky in finding some great people to work in my home. They have restored some faith in the contracting business. And, the ones that I will rehire are those who either did the job correctly and professionally -or- those who bring a positive professional attitude with them to the job, errors or no errors.

The rest can find work elsewhere.
