Things we LIKE about ourselves! :-)

Jen's thread inspired me to start this one. I know with certainty that she's not alone in feeling as though she doesn't quite "measure up." I'm sure we all feel that way, at least some of the time. Lately, I've been berating myself for having cellulite where I never used to have it, and for just generally succumbing to other aspects of the aging process that I'm not too thrilled about. I really do believe in the power of positive affirmation, though, and her thread reminds me that I need to practice it more myself. So, why not a little exercise that we can all participate in, to boost our "feel good" potential today?

For starters, here's my list of 5:

1. I have a quick wit/sharp sense of humor.

2. I have a thick, healthy head of blonde hair (and I've found just the right color to keep those gray roots at bay!).

3. My body is well proportioned.

4. I have even, white teeth.

5. I am increasingly unafraid to just be myself.

OK. Your turn! :-)

    Jen

My shrinks make me do this every so often, although they make me come up with TEN! :-)

    1) I'm a b*tch. (This CAN be a positive trait, y'know, even if you don't do the sappy acronym "Beautiful Intelligent Talented Creative Honest".)

    2) I am a dang good home cook and have done a pretty good job of teaching DH.

    3) I am deeply dedicated to my spiritual path.

    4) On occasion I can write things that make people ROTFLPTP. :-) (I do wish I could do it more consistently, but when it push it it doesn't happen.)

    5) Yesterday I went swimsuit shopping at Target with a slender, cute-as-a-button buddy from the aquatherapy program I go to and I did not cut myself down ONCE, even though normally I'm utterly savage to myself regarding body image especially if there's someone prettier/thinner around to compare myself to (and at a size 18, there are plenty of thinner women around). Since Target's maternity section and plus-size section are pretty much intermingled, my friend grabbed a tankini she thought I'd like without realizing it was a maternity item, and I put it on without realizing ditto. It actually looked waaaaay better than anything else - long enough to fit my long torso, fit "the girls" great, and just loose enough through the middle to be comfortable (I think it was supposed to be pretty much skintight on a pregnant belly). Normally I would have been nearly hysterical with despair and embarrassment about wearing maternity clothes when I'm not even pregnant, but instead I was just psyched at finding something that fit well and looked good and didn't cost me a mint. Due to a convenient clearance sale, with DH's blessing I stocked up on six tankini tops and three bottoms that can be mixed and matched, for less than I had spent on ONE swimsuit at Torrid last spring.

Hey, we're a nice group of people . . . but then again, I knew it all along :^)
What can I say about me that's positive?

    1. I'm a people person and make friends easily. I think, because I tend to see the good in everyone . . . well, most eveyone ;^D

    2. I was born with an artistic/decorating gene and have loved creating beautiful things since I was a little kid

    3. I'm good and loving mom, wife and friend

    4. I like my eyes and have great, youthful skin (thanks to lucky genes, NOT from anything I put on it)

    5. I'm basically a happy person who has a great sense of humor and am very comfortable in my own skin

    Lynn

Hey auntjen, I can tell you from experience that you'll become even more comfortable in your skin. Menopuase was surprisingly liberating, and while I've always danced to my own music I can appreciate the variety and beauty of others' tunes more readily now.

What a nice group of people! golddust and flyleft, no disparaging remarks about looks. Everyone with a loving heart IS truly beautiful!

    1. I've learned to be very comfortable with myself and others. I'm generally optimistic even though I cut through BS very easily. I try to see the bigger picture and not get bogged down by irrational minutia.

    2. I picked a wonderful husband. We've truly supported each other's growth. After much trial and error, over the decades we've learned that love means sincerely wanting the best for each other, not in a self-sacrificing way but seeing how we can build our separate dreams together. Sounds sappy, but it's how we've survived despite knowing each other can be a royal PITA sometimes.

    3. I pick great friends, interesting and eclectic people who tend to be citizens of the world and have an expansive view. Our friends have enriched my life tremendously. In turn, I know how to be a loyal and supportive friend.

    4. I'm a good cook, host great dinner parties and enjoy an unique and creative flair. I try to make everyone feel welcome and loved. It's relatively easy to brighten someone's day. Namaste!

    5. I've been a great boss by trying to be the boss I wanted to have. I've mentored lots of talent who never conceived that they could rise to middle management. Conversely, I don't allow slackers to become a drag. For the most part, those who initially failed to perform were able to see how they could excel so I rarely had to let folks go. The few who fired themselves knew how and why so they weren't blindsided.

So those are the areas I've made an honest effort to grow. Now I need to pay attention to some other aspects that need a lot more honing.

of you that I feel I know from reading here every day on
    Garden Web.

any way I can when and if needed.

    a granddaughter/family, everyone lives out of town...so
Grace and I do chat back and forth during the day when I am home.

darned good if I say so myself.

time so that in itself was an accomplishment I think.

myself and that has worked out pretty well through the
years. I tried to raise my children in the same manner.
    8. I have some regrets but it's too late to worry about
them now, life will just go on for me until I am called
    home.

After my husband passed over a yr. ago I found great
solace coming here and just reading.

A lot of the stuff I used to like about myself I no longer possess - like my hair, too thin and broken off from chemo now; my body, not as good as it used to be; my health, also questionable - but my faith is better, much better than years ago.

    Three,

    1. You have the most caring heart around.

    2. You have endurance beyond belief.

    3. You have faith and the most positive outlook on life.

    4. You never give up.

    5. You are helpful even when you need help.

    6. You are talented and resourceful.

    7. You are grateful and gracious.

This is just off the top of my head! Just think how long your list would be if I thought about it. LOL!

I have also never seen Eileen snap back or retaliate in any fashion when someone says something that's less than kind to her in these forums. I guess that falls under the category for being gracious, but I just wanted to point it out. That's one thing that really stands out in my mind when I think of her. :-)

Eileen - many here listed traits not looks. I am sure you are beautiful because you truly have a beautiful spirit. Looks fade, but a beautiful *inside* doesn't.

I agree with all that golddust and auntjen just posted.

    tina

    4. I've made a spot for myself in the world that fits like a glove.
    5. I've got a great grey streak in my hair right up front, just like my Dad had, and to me, every grey hair is a 'merit badge' of something learned.

Thank you for saying such sweet things!! You bring tears to my eyes. God has been so good to me, you know? I am still here.

    Love

    - I am very organized and efficient. And almost always on time for everything!

My first posting on conversations. Great topic idea auntjen.

5 things I like about myself:

    1. I'm happy with myself and my spiritual beliefs.
    2. I'm creative and a good planner.
    3. I had the good fortune or good judgement 43 years ago to marry my true love - a very nice, kind, intelligent, and hardworking man who still loves me.
    4. I raised children (with the help of their father) who are good parents and honest, productive, intelligent, and kind adults.
    5. My hair (now that I no longer color it) is an amazing color. Looks like a really good highlight process. Better than any I paid lots of money for years ago.

And most importantly - I'm still alive at age 67 and in reasonable health while many contemporaries have gone.

    Things I like about me:

    1. Mind and spirit are more important to me than material goods.

    2. I feel like I have evolved a great deal in my life. I have made some difficult changes and let go of ideas and mind-sets about life that I once thought were important.

    3. Despite some serious health issues, I am quite fit; I eat well and get lots of exercise and sleep.

    4. I am always on time.

    5. I like to think I'm a good mama :-)

    Thanks for posting this Jen.

Except for the Financial Times crossword, the things I like about myself are the same superpowers that every mother has.

    1) My big black, super duper curly hair, glasses, face of freckles, big lips, flat wide-ish nose (w/ a giant freckle in the middle of course!), unfashionably archless and full brows (still neatly waxed though mind you!), green eyes and vanilla latte mocha complexion. A fitting tribute to my colorful heritage!

    2) Falling into the stereotypical dramatic artist role. I see things in black and white, right or wrong and am very passionate about these things. Some might say I'm difficult (and I am to a certain point) but I've ALWAYS prided myself on thinking rationally while being in the throws of something. Totally throws the other person off.

    3) I'm a closet softie.

    4) Being able to communicate w/ scared or angry dogs. I loved my many yrs working at the SPCA. It thrilled me when the police or another animal rescue organization would send for me to assist in a 'dog-gone-bad' situation. I loved being able to waltz in and get a dog on a leash and walk out w/ an entirely different dog than the one I was sent for. I've seen a lot of things and lots of it was exciting. I've talked doggies off sides of bridges and have gone down stream holding onto dogs after a flood to rescue them. Hey - we all need a little understanding!

    5) Math. I discovered it while taking college courses for something in my earlier 30's. Now I just like to take courses. It's such a challenge and what a wonderful feeling when you correctly figure out a problem!

    6) There's something to be said for contentment. I love my lot in life, my husband, kids and house and that makes me happy.

Ttodd, truer words were never spoken: " There's something to be said for contentment. I love my lot in life, my husband, kids and house and that makes me happy."

There *is* quite a lot to be said for contentment, a virtue that is too easily dismissed & discounted in our day & age. You are very wise, T. I aspire to live that way (don't always succeed) & find it so beautiful when I see others doing so.

Thanks Stinky - I have to give credit for that to my husband. A few months into our relationship he'd told me that he's just 'An Everyday Man' (a favorite song of his) and played the song for me. The craziest sense of calm came over me and for the 1st time in my life I felt free and happy and content. I never looked back.
He'd listened to the song so much that he wore out the cassette (how dated were we). When we decided to marry he wrote to Gary Chapman about me and his being an "Everyday Man". He wanted to play the song at our reception but was having a terrible time locating a CD. Gary Chapman sent him a signed CD to play at our wedding.

    by Gary Chapman, Jerry McPherson

    Every day somebody finds
    Someone right for them
    And every day they live
    They live that first day
    Over and over again
    My somone's out there somewhere
    I'm waiting here all alone
Sure hope I find her before
    She finds herself a home

    CHORUS:
    Everyday man
Stays at home when he can
He's in love with his everyday wife
    All I demand
    Out of love's open hand
Is to live just an everyday life

Every day he goes to work
    He'd rather stay with her
And every day he comes home
    He knows he'll find things
    Just like they were
    Later on, they'll say
    Goodnight--they're right
    That's what it is
    I've got to find someone
    To my nights good
    Just like his
    (REPEAT CHORUS)
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Oh, everyday, everyday man
    (REPEAT CHORUS)
    Oh, everyday man
He's in love, he's in love with his wife
    Every day, oh, oh, yeah
