Hello friends, I am contemplating installation of a number of split-unit heat pumps in my home. It seems to fit our lifestyle and house. I could use a little more information about what kind of equipment is available. Does anyone know of a primer on the subject that I can consult? In addition, if someone wants to respond to my questions directly, I would appreciate it greatly.
Specifically, I understand that one can find and install more than one indoor unit with a single outdoor compressor/coil. Is this true? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Given the first question, this might be redundant or not. Is indoor equipment available that would work in two adjoining rooms at the same time or independently?
Are ground-source heat pumps available and are they a good idea?
Right now we have gas forced-air, central AC, and leaky ducts. We have 2 x 2-ton compressors both feeding a leaking, split evaporator. I hope to reduce the requirement significantly through weatherization.
Some of you will remember when I first brought up the split condenser in November when we bought the house. That means that each compressor has its own part of the evaporator with separate pressure and suction lines. One circuit is leaking and the other is not, for now.
I am contemplating some significant grading on the lot including filling in a swimming pool. That might make ground-source less expensive if we do it concurrently.
