Do you have clout?

...or have a PlusClout score? I had no idea what that was until a friend of my daughter's was telling me about it last evening. Granted, I've been using the internet only since mid-2008. I don't have Facebook or Twitter accounts, and the few sites to which I belong generally use 'handles' rather that real names.

From my understanding, the PlusClout website calculates a score between 0 and 100, based on one's presence/influence in the google-search world. And, according to our young friend, Justin Beiber has a score of 100, compared to President Obama, whose score is in the low 90's.

I searched gardenweb/clout, and couldn't find any threads addressing the issue--is this old news to everyone but me?

Here is a link that might be useful: pluscout.com

For me, the question is not *Do I have clout?*, its do I CARE if I have clout - and I don't! IMO it's just another part of the Look At Me syndrome that is afflicting a large segment of our society. I like being a *private* citizen.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I thought you were asking as to whether or not I have clout in my life, or in my family or at work... And nope, pretty much zilch. Pretty much nobody pays attention to me - oh well. :)

I:doubt if I have even 1 ounce of clout, but i'm good with it. I've been asked to join Facebook several times, and don't have the slightest inclination to *want* to join. Same goes forr twitter. I don't even IM or skipe!

What's important to some is nonsense to others. I spend a lot of my free time with my grands, as well as tracking down things to sell in my space. If I buy furniture it needs to be painted, and that's time consuming also. There are-lot of other things I do as well. ;o)

I read a story about Clout ratings in Wired magazine a few months ago. I couldn't figure out where a normal peron could find anyone's score. Seems like a marketing gimmick more than anything else . Ugh! The more Facebook friends and Twitter and blog followers you have the higher your score. High point people often get free upgrades at hotels and other perks.

I pray to God I never get clout on the internet, unless I do something wonderful and lived to talk about it! lol.

Thank you all--you've made me feel better. Since posting the thread I've talked to several computer-savvy people--one my age, but who is very well-versed on internet technology/social networking, and two recent grads (20 somethings), who are very active on Facebook, and who used the internet for thesis research. None of them had heard of the PlusClout scoring system.

Our young 'computer geek' friend cited an incident he had read about, where a candidate for a job was asked what his PlusClout score was. When he admitted that he new nothing about it, the interviewer looked it up for him. They found that it was a low score, and he wasn't hired.

I don't move in high-powered circles--I'm happy at home canning salsa, but I wonder how this will affect my children's careers.

And, those of you who think you have no clout (in the real world)--don't sell yourselves short! I'm sure you have more influence than you realize. I recognize your names from other threads and forums, so you have clout in GW!

No clout here of any kind or shape! :)

Not on Facebook, nor Twitter -- does not even use my cell phone if I can avoid it ....

The only souls with any clout hereabouts?

    The cats! :)

No clout here either, which is fine with me...really it's sad that employers have taken the steps they have to qualify candidates for employment and even invade the lives of their employees' private lives.

I value what little privacy we have left and will never join Facebook, twitter or any other social network because of that. They are just too invasive for my taste. I do text or IM if I need to speak to someone quickly on the fly, and we do occasionally Skype with family members in other countries, but I just see them as practical tools for communication, not tools for casual conversation and networking.

I can't help but think this is an urban legend created by the clout website people to promote themselves and make it appear that their system matters.

I think you may be right, hhireno. PlusClout is a marketing gimmick - nothing more, nothing less.

    lol, patty_cakes!

Yes, I thought about the story being the type that gets circulated in emails. Our friend heard the story in one of his computer repair/programming classes, but that doesn't mean it's reliable.
