Help evaluating Heat Pump Quotes

This is a heat pump replacement for my rental home in San Antonio, 2 story, 3024 square feet. House is 10 years old, well insulated, no duct or comfort issues, no unusual installation issues. Manual J calls for a 5 ton unit. Just looking for a replacement heat pump system, as current system just went over 10 years old, is now out of warranty and has been through 3 compressors in its life. (that installer wonÂt get this job). Will be flushing and using existing lineset because it is behind brick, but it is large enough for R410 (7/8 inch, I think). Since this is a rental, it wonÂt qualify for the tax credit, but will qualify for a $500 utility company credit if I put in a 15 seer instead of a 13 seer, just seems like the price differential is too great. All include txv valve and thermostat, but I need to get details on the Âstats. Any advice on 13 vs 15 seer and then which brand is the better choice? Tennant pays utilities.

Bid 1: 13 Seer Amana GSZ130601 with ARUF486016 10 year parts and labor warranty $3200

Bid 2: 13 Seer Carrier 25HBC360 with FB4CNF060, 10 year parts and labor warranty, $3889

Bid 3: 15 Seer Carrier 25HBC560 with FX4DNF060, 10 year parts and labor warranty, $5998

Bid 4: 15 Seer Amana SSZ140601 with MBVC2000, 10 year parts and labor warranty, $5998

All these systems are comparable. I don't think I'd splurge the $2000 to get the 15 SEER system unless rebates made it worth it, and in this case they don't appear to. You don't pay utilities, and between the Carrier products, you don't gain that much in way of features or reliability per se. You weren't quoted a "genuine" Amana unit. These units have model numbers starting with "A." They are considered a more premium unit in line with Carrier, for instance. However in comparing Goodman's base equipment with Carrier's base equipment, I don't see an advantage either way if all are from the same reputable installer. The installer will make the difference. Personally if I were looking to install a base grade model, I would look at Trane's XB line. For a builder model, I think they are pretty solid. Also more expensive. Or consider looking one step up in Carrier and Amana lines at the Carrier 25HCB360 or Amana ASZ14060.

unless you are renting to a favorite relative, it would be foolish to upgrade to a 15 SEER, 12.5 EER, 8.5 HSPF heat pump and pay $2000 to get back $500. However, since this is rental property you will be able to write off the HP on your taxes. You might want to confirm with your tax preparer/accountant as this is what I have always done.

I like Ryan's suggestion best. Go to a better grade 13 or 14 SEER system like the Amana ASZ and Carrier Comfort 13 Heat Pumps.

Here is an example that has pretty good numbers.

    3685277 Active Systems COMFORT 13 PURON HP CARRIER AIR CONDITIONING 25HCB360A30 FX4DN(B,F)061 60000 12.00 14.00 59500 8.20 37200

    IMO
    Good Luck!
