Air Handler Closet Dimensions

I was planning on a packaged unit for my HVAC needs, but after evaluating some "left over space", a split system may be in the cards. I am framing in a closet today and need to know if the space I have allotted is sufficient.

I have an area that is roughly 30-36" wide by about 36"-48" deep (7' high). Is this sufficient space for an air handler and all associated duct/lines? Oh, it will be for a 1,000 sf home with probably a 1.5 ton unit. The duct work will exit above the air handler into the attic. What is a min size?

Height and depth should be no problem. However if the return air duct is going to be run down vertically to the side of the unit, assuming a 10" width, give or take, and room for a radius elbow transition into the return box, I'd want it at least 36" wide. However the return air setup may be different and width may not end up being as important. I would discuss with your HVAC contractor first.

I was planning on putting the air return in the door that accesses the closet.

After measuring for the closet, it looks like I will have a depth of about 36" for the Air Handler Closet, will that depth be sufficient? Still working on width, but should have at least 32"-36".

Thanks,

Depth is fine, most air handlers are no more than 26" deep. I know Trane is 21" deep. A humidifier may still be possible with 36" depth.

Looks good, return in the door is the way to go.

1.5 ton
Trane/AS is 21.5w 21d
Bryant/Carrier can be 14-5/16w x 22-1/16d
or for a more efficient AH 17-5/8w x 22-1/16d
