Because there was no instruction to change to both loops, I believe you should continue to crochet through only the front loops.

Well, is this first row of directions unique to the pattern? Is this the only row where you work in the front loops only? If so, it is probably done to help turn the brim of the cloche so that it will stick out. In that case, I would go through both loops of the stitch in making the last 2.5 inches.

Sheila, I think you were right, because I finished the hat going only through the front loops, and it got tighter, and when I was finished I couldn't fit it on my head! I looked again at the picture of the hat, and it seemed to only pull in on the one row, and then the bottom flared out a little. Oh well, it was a lesson learned. I had fun making it. Maybe my little niece will be able to wear it.

Sheila, I concede to you. I do believe you are right. I looked at a crusher hat pattern I have and it is only asking for the row done in front loops for the beginning of the brim.

Wouldn't it be very simple to rip those last few rows back and redo them, so that you could wear it youself?

Ivamae, you are right, and that is what I have decided to do, when I have time to get back to that project!
