In her book "Knitting On The Edge", Nicky Epstein shows several ruffles which would look nice on scarves. The most "lettuce"-like involves casting on 3 times the number of stitches you want to end up with; knitting your ruffle the length you want, and then doing a row of k3tog. If you want a plainer lettuce, I am sure twice the number of stitches and k2tog would do the job - Ms. Epstein calls it a basic gathered ruffle. Her book is wonderful, and you may want to check it out at your library and look at the "Ruffle" section.

But....if you knit a scarf in a tube....where would you put the lettuce edge? sew it on???

If you knit a scarf as a tube (on circular needle or double points)and want a "lettuce"-type beginning, just cast on twice as many stitches as you will need for the scarf, knit in the round until you get the length you want your "lettuce" to be, do one round of 2ktog - and you will have the right number of stitches for your scarf, and a nice, frilly edge. When you have the length you want, do one round of k into the front and back of each stitch, thereby doubling your stitch count; knit your lettuce and cast off.

Yay!

That's exactly what I needed to hear. And even better, the yarn I was looking at is now on sale, so I can make twice the number of scarves.

(Linda -- your question made me reconsider the language that I was using. I suddenly had a mental image of myself sitting with my knitting in a giant drainage pipe ('knitting in a tube') trying to staple a piece of lettuce onto my scarf!)

Ruffles can be made in many variations. For a REALLY frilly effect, do the 3x-as-many-as-you-need stitches, and then a k3tog decrease row. For your increase, the "knit into the front, yo, knit into the back of the same stitch" works well.

I was picturing the lettuce edge on the long edges of the scarf......think that would be nigty...
I call it "knitting in the round"...
