It's fun to take a class. Check with local yarn shops or Michaels if you have one. Or, if you know anyone who knits, they could probably get you started pretty quickly.

And don't forget adult ed. Our town offers classes for beginning knitting. Yours might too.

star, do you have a senior center near you or maybe a nursing home/assisted living type place? You can ask there if there would be anyone who knows how to knit who would be willing to teach you. Remember, just because someone is in a nursing home, doesn't mean they don't do needle work. I'll bet there is someone near by who would just love the companionship and time spent with you teaching you! If I lived close by, I'd try to teach you. I've already offered to teach one of the girls on the KT who lives close to me.

Thats a great idea about the nursing home. I do have a Michaels but I would rather be one on one than in a class. i have asked around and no one I know is a knitter so I might just check out the nursing home.

All these are great suggestions. I sought out other knitters. Often yarn shops welcome informal knit sessions, and have classes. Learning from others, in a class or informally, is the best way, I believe. As far as knitting goes, books have been supplementary for me. stitchguide.com's videos have helped me a lot, too.
I have to admit that with crochet, I learned a lot from books and from trying things out myself, yet I've also gotten answers on useful stuff about crochet from other people.
