Help with an old stitch

Many years ago I made a knitted triangular shawl for my grandmother. I remember how it looked but not exactly how it was done. Every row was knit. I'm quite sure that I started on the long edge. The stitch pattern used a row of double-loop knit stitches...... on the next row you knit one loop and drop the other making a row of loose (long) stitches. I tried a sample piece doing only one row of plain knit between double-loop stitch rows and found that it was not reversible, so I am guessing that I should be doing the double-loop knit stitch every third row...does that sound right? Doing it that way I would have the option of working my decreases at the beginning or ending of each of the plain knit rows.

Think I have been away from knitting too long. ;(
