Millie, that is called the elongated garter stitch. I have done the same with 3 wraps instead of 2. I knit 4 rows of garter between the elongated rows, but 2 should work also, especially if this is where you will be doing the decreases.

Donna, thanks for the help. I got to thinking about this and it must have been 40 years ago that I did that shawl. Grandma has been gone 30 years, now. They say it's the short term that goes first...right? :)

Do you crochet? If so, there is a great and easy way to make a triangular shawl.

It's sort of like the granny stitch crochet, but, the "petals" go in between the row of base stitches.. And, as you continue each row, it decreases all on it's own..
