Kitchen Opus

I never thought it would ever get there. In fact I doubted it so much that in truth, I'm not truly "there". We still have a few last things to add but at the rate we are going, my kitchen will NEVER get into the finished kitchens gallery. So, in the interest of calling it a day, I'm entering my kitchen into the gallery and declaring it done (well, 98% done). Not to mention most of you have probably seen these pictures before.

Pictures are at the following link.

The wooden table at the end of the kitchen should be in the basement by now. There is still to come a rift cut oak cabinet between the oven and the back door to house the microwave and the toaster oven. We'll get there sometime. There is also to come a shelf above the fridge. This is what happens when you have such extreme installation problems that you have to fire the chaps and then hire someone else to fix the big errors. This shelf business is going to be DH and my project when we have even the faintest whiff of the remodeling bug back in us.

OK, so the vital stats:

Room is 10.5x 13.5 + 8 x 5.5.

Floor is 12" Italian through-body porcelain tile. Its carrara marble-like but porcelain - our floor joists were rated for tile but not for stone else we were going to get Vermont slate.

French door - Loewen (love this door!).

Backsplash - two. On the oven and fridge side, rift cut white oak with 5 or 6 coats of varnish (or sealer or something duly painful to apply). This lives behind the fridge and beneath the top shelf too.

On the sink and stove wall, plate glass backsplash from GlasskoteUSA. This is tempered sheet glass - green glass not the clear starfire.

Counters - Blue Night Granite (basically a black granite with cobalt blue confetti-like irridescent inclusions). We have 30" deep counters over the oven to fit that recess defined by the bumpout in the back of the room. The sink side got the regular 25.5" deep counters as defined by the doorway. 30" counters rock - sort of wish I'd moved the doorway now.

Paint - Halfway mix of Restoration Hardware Silver Sage reduced by half with white paint.

Cabinets are IKEA Askerum - european ash with a gray stain.

Cabinet pulls - stainless steel bar pulls are a mix of Siro, Omnia, Sukutsune choosing by the lengths we needed. Also have some Atlas Homeware's Modernist pulls for the tall uppers.

Stove, oven, dishwasher - Bosch.

Hood - Gaggenau.

Fridge - pre-remodel and don't recall manufacturer. It works and doesn't look broken down so it stayed.

Stools - Lem from Design Within Reach.

We really like the look of the new kitchen. BUT the absolute best thing by far and away about the kitchen is the layout. I got awesome support from the gardenweb with the layout, with choosing the backsplash and with help debugging where our contractors were falling down on the job and how to handle those problems. For that I am so incredibly grateful to the gardenweb members.

The whole kitchen is great, and so well coordinated. I'd cook in it any day!

    Nice knob choices!

We're getting close to the end - I hope to be able to post finished kitchen pics in about a month. I can't believe how differently our two Askerum kitchens turned out.

    Sensational. Sleek and way cool.

Oh and BTW THANKYOU to you for that 'dishwasher and crockery/cutlery drawers next to' combo picture you posted a while back- I have copied exactly that into my own design. Much appreciated.

Well, well. Seems I have a new favorite kitchen. :) mindstorm, your attention to detail is impeccable. Seriously, everything is so thoughtfully chosen for its art and its function. I love the combination of backsplashes, too. The only thing cooler than the plate glass might be the rift-cut oak, and even that's debatable. Hee.

    Lovely!

Well, we actually put in more of the finishing elements to take this from 95% to probably ~99%. Several trim pieces were missing until approx a month or two ago, and we finally got around to getting our rift-cut white oak and brushed aluminum microwave unit ordered and built. I couldn't believe what an improvement a couple or so of trim pieces could make. Ergo, updated. The plan had called for some rift oak shelves in back of the kitchen as well as over the microwave unit but I truly don't know if we will ever get there!

So updates at the almost entirely done state are here.

I know it's been 2 years to the day since you posted this but I have a few questions.
First of all, I'd like to say you have my dream kitchen: the cabinets, backsplash, appliances, white/grey colors. Perrrfect!!!
I'm just in the first phase of custom building our home and we're looking at pricing options. We were also thinking of going the Ikea way for kitchen cabinetry since it's only 1/10th the price of its Italian counterparts. We were concerned about wear and tear. Since you've had yours for 2 years, I just wanted to know whether the cabinets are holding up well. Would you recommend it even after using it for 2 years.

Also, do you remember how much you paid for the Glasskote backsplash, for the backsplash and installation? How much did you order? I know it's a stretch but if you do have that information, that'd be great!

    Thanks in advance.
