Did you get the pattern off the net? Doesn't make sense
to do a Yarn over then turn. Can you look at pattern and
see if you typed something wrong for us?

I replied to you under Maggie's posting before I read your own posting. So now I know what you are knitting.

I haven't actually knitted up your instructions and it's a long time since I knitted a baby's bootee so I'm relying on visualising it. And I lousy at written instuctions. But ..

What the pattern is telling you to do is to decrease stitches in the centre of the piece - this will give you a curved piece of knitting. The stitches (24 at the beginning of the instruction) at either end are for the side and sole of the bootee - the bit you are decreasing on is in the middle (the top/instep).

In many/most patterns YO in one row, which is then knitted in the subsequent row, produces a hole/eyelet. And there is usually a K.2tog. or Pass Slip Stitch Over to compensate for the increased stitch - the total number of stitches stays the same.

However, in your pattern the YO should not be knitted. I think it is an unfortunate term to use. It should be something like "yarn around".

You knit x number of stitches,
pass the yarn to the other side of the work (not over the needle) so it is in a position NOT to make a stitch,
turn,
knit x number of stitches,
repeat.

So you are decreasing by 1 stitch in every 2nd row - and not increasing at all. And, look mum, no holes!

As you decrease, and continue on the Knit 8 etc., you will gradually work your way into the side borders.

As you knit, the centre bit will start to bulge out (don't you just love my knitting instructions?)

After you have worked a few rows, you will notice that the Slip 1 and the P.2tog (which should occur over the same place in each row will form a sort of edge to the centre bit.

Just check after the 14 rows that you have 44 stitches - there should be 17 unworked stitches on the right hand side, the 10 stitches in the middle that you have been working on, and the unworked 17 stitches from the other side.

When you get to the cast off bit, the stitch you have passed the 10th cast off stitch over will be the 1st stitch of the remaining 17 (i.e. - after casting off the 10, you will have 16 remaining on the left hand needle.

I do hope this makes sense to you. My apologies if I have confused you more. I can see it - but I can't write it very well.
