Your easiest sock 'recipe'. ?

Hi what is your easiest(especially as per the heel and toe) sock recipe? I've tried the "spiral" version and I like it but would like something that looks more like a sock. P.S. do you have to fit all socks before knitting? Are there any patterns etc. that are more or less one size fits all? Or that you could break into small medium large patterns/categories? Thanks. :)

I use the sock pattern from The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns by Ann Budd. The way the book is laid out is: you make a swatch to find your gauge, then you measure your foot to see what size you wear. Then you use the instructions for that size and guage. It gives me nice socks each time. You do have to figure out your gauge though. The socks are knit from the cuff down to the toe.

The nice thing about this book is that you can pick up any old yarn you get anywhere (LYS, yard sale, wherever) and figure out your gauge with whatever needles you want to use, and you're off. No searching for Bernat FuzzyWuzzy Heather Fizz or whatever.

It also has patterns for basic sweaters, vests, mittens, gloves, hats, tams, scarves (and of course socks). It even has room in the margins and in the back for notes which I find really helpful. She also gives some great tips for each project.

I've been using that Reggia yarn that makes strips as you go. Wild Socks!!

I use the sock pattern at www.royea.net/sock.html. It's called The Super Simple Knitwit Sock Pattern. I am new to knitting socks and after many unsuccessful tries at other patterns, somebody in here pointed me towards this one and it works great for me. I am using it right now. Also, it gives you a tip to visit Socks 101 for step by step photo instructions and that helped me immensely!!

Thanks for the website, lawmar! There are lots of links at this site that look very helpful as well. I'm a new knitter and I have been quite intimidated by socks, although my mum insists they are easy. I'll let you know how it goes...

I use Ann Norling's Basic Adult Sock Pattern. It gives you instructions for 3 different yarn weights, and is very easy to do. Have fun with your socks!

I have used Ann Norlings's pattern and I love it but I have to agree with ell -- that book is GREAT!! I had some left over alpaca and found some 40 year old black silk yarn by Unger and now have an awesome pair of socks. It is a great book for cleaning out the stash closet!!!

Love making socks.

And if you are brave and want to do something fun -- go to www.knitty.com and do "Tip toe thru the tulips" socks. I did a pair and they turned out adorable. Particularly since I'm a flower farmer!!
