Need pattern for sampler afghan square

I'm making a sampler-type afghan of 6" squares, 6 different patterns. Five of the patterns have come out fine, but the last one (a zig zag pattern) just doesn't come out to 6" wide even when I knit tight and even when I go down a needle size. About l/2" too big, and the others have been right on 6". I don't know why! I just wouldn't have any idea how to modify the pattern.

Does anyone have a simple pattern which I could substitute? I've had it with zig zags!

Can you just cast on fewer stitches and still get the pattern?

I have a pattern book for 63 different designs. The squares end up 7 inches but there are a few that can be modified. Let me know if you are interested.

Sheila, I don't think I would know how to alter the square and still get the pattern right. It's two zigzags moving up the square.

I found this page and will probably do either the diagonal rib or moss stitch.
