Yes, that will help, and try making it narrower too. I have bought expensive (for me) yarn to try a scarf for DD to wear just because the yarn looks pretty and I want to see how it will look when it is made up. But it is expensive enough that I am determined to do it in one skein only. So I just use 3/4 inch diameter wood needles I made myself from dowel, and the scarves turn out so pretty. For the fancy eyelash type, I just knit every row so it won't curl. But you have to go real big in needle size and narrower to save any quantity of yarn.

Also, you could make the scarf with another yarn in stripes or sections or border the scarf by crocheting or knitting an inch or two or three in another yarn. Knitters are thrifty.

I think you should follow Sheila Joyce's advice about making it skinnier, and you should use the larger needles as you suggested. If it still isn't as long as you like it, then you can buy a nice contrasting yarn and add a section of that at either end, and maybe knit or crochet a small border all the way around. That way it won't look like an afterthought.

If you don't want it to be too "holey" you can knit it along with another yarn like a kid mohair or an eyelash yarn if you don't mind that the original yarn won't be as visible.
