Some good ones are Debbie Stoller's Stitch and B*tch (funny and hip but may offend some conservative knitters) and Knitting for Dummies (not flashy but lots of useful info). If you want a small, basic techniques book, look for Vicki Square's Knitting Companion. There's lot of free help on the web like in the site below:
