A question on the point where you turn is that for making the thumb section vs the rest of the gauntlet? If so for the ones I have made I generally use the double pointed sock needles so I have 5 and generally I pick up another needle and follow the instructions at that point and finish off or you could place the other stitches on a holder if you need all of your needles. Then you go back to the idle stitches and at the base of the thumb (a crochet hook is sometimes handy here) and pull a loop of the thread through one of the base edges and then pick up where I left off with the other needle. Hope this helps and makes some sense.

Another thought is if you have a local knitting shop. I know the ladies at ours are more than willing to help with a pattern that stumps me or when I need to learn a new stitch.

Are you sure the pattern is knit on 2 needles? Or doesn't suggest that you have an extra set of needles? The only time I have seen to turn in mid row (this makes a short row, and is on purpose, like at the heel of a sock)is when working with multiple needles, as in double points.

As to the thumb question, I can't help you there. I haven't made any of these yet, though I have a pattern and want to get them going so my hands will stay warm at the computer! I have made mittens, but again only on multiple needles, not one pair of strait needles. I would think you would be putting sts on a sts holder somewhere at the thumb and picking up the thumb sts again at a later time. Good luck.
