You just take a new piece of yarn, wrap it around the needle leaving a 6 inch tail, and continue knitting per the instructions. You do not use the exact wording of the pattern, and I have not been knitting gloves here in sunny California, but I think what you have is a partially knit row (the left needle) and a gap where the thumb is with two picked up stitches, and then the 14 stitches that will make up the rest of the row. So you knit the 2 stitches you picked up at the thumb, and then you finish the row by knitting the stitches on the right hand needle. (You had already knit the left hand needle's stitches when you got yourself over to the thumb to finish it, so you actually had half that row already knitted when you finished the thumb.)
