all comes down to the same you will get 24,000 btu's with a 2 ton, 36,000 btu with a 3 ton. the caps are the same,contact coils are the same. just go with the best sales guy, a new unit should last between 10 and 15 years..........

Get at least three bids for the job. The contractor should look at the entire home and the ducting. They should measure and do a heat load on the home, make suggestions in tightening the home or if you may need more insulation in the attic/walls. Decreasing infiltration and adding insulation can sometimes allow installing a system which is a ton smaller. In this case, the system is less costly to purchase and to operate. This is a good time to look into these things and possibly make the home more efficient.
