.....I have thrush in my mouth due to the antibiotics I was taking for the sore throat/glands! I took the last pill tonight.

I'm sitting here literally LOL because it seems it never ends with me!

I wanna go to a spa. :(

At least OU plays tonight on TV, Go Sooners!

LOL Oak you poor thing! At least it is easy to treat. I had thrush once from using a steroid inhaler for asthma/bronchitis. The nurse practitioner I went to gave me a script for a liquid medication but didn't write what volume to give me. When the pharmacist called her to ask, her answer was "a large amount" duh! Last time I ever saw her, she was obviously clueless. Anyway, we figured it out and it was gone in a day or two.

I have a dream where I am packing for a trip or moving and I just can't get all the stuff packed in time, and more and more stuff that needs to be packed keeps appearing. It's very anxiety provoking. I have this dream about once every two weeks. I'm sure it has something to do with feeling overwhelmed. Do you have a recurring dream, or any kind of memorable dream?

Sorry about the above! I was trying to post a thread and I put it under your thread. DUH!

Sorry about your sore throat and now the thrush. You deserve some time in a spa!

What the heck is that? Never heard of it.

ff, it's a common disease that happens mainly in women, usually due to an antibiotic. Girl babies can get it in their vaginal area after taking an antibiotic.

No wonder my whole mouth was on fire tonight when I was eating a plain ole grilled cheese sandwich! It had no taste except it seemed way salty for some reason.

I won't be able to get meds until Tuesday. Should I gargle or something? Not with salt though! lol

Thrush is an overgrowth of candida (yeast). I NEVER take an antibiotic without also taking acidophilus supplements... acidophilus is good gut bacteria that also keeps the candida that lives naturally in your body in check. Antibiotics kill the good bacteria with the bad and you need to replenish it. I also eat as much yogurt as I can stomach too.

My Mom says the cure for thrush is to wipe your mouth out with a baby's wet diaper!

    Oh no, so sorry, Oakley!
Spa? Tell your DH you want a "spa-like" experience at home the remainder of the holiday weekend! A foot massage, (to get your mind off of your mouth) freshly prepared meals, fresh flowers, oh, and maybe DH can make YOU a dump cake. That would be good comfort food! Also, pineapple is supposed to have healing properties.

Whatever you do, I hope you are all better, & feeling well, very, very soon, Oakley!

I've never heard of acidophilus, I don't think it's common around here unless it's given to people who had thrush in the past. But you can bet I'll start getting some!

And I'm completely out of yogurt. :( I just knew something else was wrong with me, one of the symptoms is feeling like something's stuck in the throat and hard to swallow. That was one of my symptoms! I don't have acid reflux, it was thrush!! And boy is this stuff fast growing.

An older relative (male) had this often, after many successive rounds of heavy dose IV antibiotics. I hear it was miserable. I don't like to take antibiotics unless they tell me I'll die or something if I don't ;) (They get prescribed too readily for minor things around here.) But when I do take one, I always have yogurt. At least one serving daily. I never remember to go to the health food store and get some acidophilus tho.

You really have been suffering one thing after another - I agree that a spa day would be a really nice treat. Can you make it happen? Wait till the thrush is waning so you can really enjoy it, though.

Oakley, you can buy acidophilus milk at any grocery store.

Oral thrush is quite common in babies - both female and male. It is a form of a yeast infection. Acidophilus is everywhere, it is an active ingredient in some yogurts (make sure it says this). I take a probiotic daily which keeps the flora in the gut in the right ratio, plus it is good for the immune system.

So, you haven't been diagnosed yet? It would make sense you got it after the antibiotic, but you thought you had reflux before the antibiotic. I would ask the doctor about the reflux and also the nexium. You don't want to be taking an unnecessary medicine. It could also be related to your diabetes. When my MIL had what was first diagnosed as thrush, I read up on it. Normally, healthy adults don't get thrush. It did mention those with blood sugar problems, etc. which she didn't have. Turns out though she didn't have thrush, she had internal shingles. There is a test they do, you swish something in your mouth and white spots will show if you have thrush. Apparently her shingles showed.

oak, hope you're feeling better. Rather than fruit yogurt, it may be better to buy Stoneyfield or other organic plain yogurt or an organic Greek yogurt. Read the labels to be sure it contains live bacteria probiotics. Easy to find in any grocery as many health food stores that carry live capsules might be closed tomorrow. Eating this daily will help reset your good flora which the antibiotics killed off. It's also good for general health and well-being so you can enjoy regularly.

Tina, here's the steps I went through.

Woke up with bad sore throat and sore glands.

I had some old antibiotics (a few months old) for a tooth which I didn't take. So I started those on my own three days before I saw the doctor.

By the time I went to the doctor, the back of my tongue was hurting and it was hard to swallow. Sore throat and glands were still there.

She told me to stop the other antibiotic and she put me on a different one. So my thrush began with the first antibiotic and by the time I finished my second antibiotics, the thrush was full blown.

I must have been in the beginning stages of thrush which wasn't caught. Now I have the textbook symptoms.

Funny thing is, I ate a lot of Yogurt when I was on the antibiotics!

Tomorrow can't come soon enough so I can get some meds. This is miserable!

Tina, I forgot to add. I read on several sites that people with diabetes are prone to thrush because of our compromised immune system. Same with shigles, back when I got those I read that diabetes can cause it because of our poor immune system.

I have those white spots in my mouth, most are on the sides of my cheek, and my tongue looks awful, like it's been scraped. lol.

I'm a big milk drinker, does acidophilus milk even taste good? Or do I need a big scoop of Nestle's Quik? :)

Poor Oakley. Having something in your mouth is just inescapable.

Stonyfield yogurt has acidophilus. Look to be sure that it is "live and active." There are other brands too, like Yoplait.

You know, oakley, I have never tried it. My ex-MIL used to drink it exclusively, so it couldn't be too bad and probably is just like normal milk. I'd give it a try. I would get it except we get our milk (and yogurt and butter and ice cream) delivered from a local dairy.

Look for keffir too. Whole Foods has it and it tastes like yogurt only is much better for you- more good bacteria strains.

Hi--had to jump in here. There is a prescription lozenge available from your dentist or physician, called Mycelex Troche. It is an anti-fungal lozenge, which you allow to dissolve in your mouth five times a day, for several days, which works beautifully.

You can do warm water salt rinses, but the best thing is to get a prescription for Diflucan (fluconazole is the generic name). It is a pill and will clear the thrush up quickly. Some doctors will offer an oral rinse medication, but when it is as advanced as yours is, it's better to go straight to the Diflucan.

In the meantime, avoid sugary foods and drinks including alcohol because sugar feeds Candida growth.

Thanks for the med suggestions, you can bet I'll be phoning their office first thing in the morning.

I also read that sugar is bad for thrush. So I must have had extra sugar in my saliva which made it worse.

I looked online for OTC remedies for thrush and one of them was peroxide mixed with a little bit of water. I checked the EXP date on the peroxide and it expired 13 years ago. LOL. It's on my grocery list.

I was at a bday party yesterday and I fixed myself a small piece of cake, and I couldn't even taste it.

DH made me a batch of his chicken noodle soup w/carrots today (we got a cold front last night!), and that's what I'll have for dinner. He had to leave out the pepper though. Nothing spicy.

Now I have to work on my immune system. I'm getting all those "small" diseases due to diabetes (type 2, which is mostly under control) and it's starting to bother me.

I feel your pain. Once, when I was immunocompromised, I developed thrush. I just thought I was getting a sore throat so I was using throat lozenges (not sugar free) and hard candies to try and soothe my throat. THEN, a couple of days later, I go to the doctor and I find out it's thrush and that I've been probably doing almost the worst possible thing. Who knew? I wish docs would be more forthcoming about possible side effects of certain conditions and meds.

Couldn't find where we discussed this before but I bought one of the Edy's smoothies and had it this morning. My grocery does carry those and the shakes. It was really quite good! I got the tropical fruit flavor. It was 1.69, probably cheaper at Walmart. Be careful though, they do have a good bit of sugar.

Tina, I'm glad you liked it. I haven't had one in a few days, not very hungry with this thrush. I still have a nice stash though. They sure come in handy when you're too tired to make a homemade smoothie.

I never did post after my "doctor's" visit, I thought I had!

My doctor was out so I saw his daughter, a Nurse's Practitioner. She shouldn't be practicing anything. lol

She's real quiet, and I honestly don't think she's seen much thrush in adults because it's not that common unless something else is going on.

I told her I have thrush. I had to see her to get a prescription. She asked why I thought I had thrush. I told her it's "textbook" symptoms and pictures I've seen online.

She looks in my mouth, doesn't really say anything, makes me feel awkward, and I asked her what she saw. She said my throat looks irritated. Ya think?

Then I asked her "Did you SEE my tongue??" and I was laughing but kind of amazed. My whole tongue is a solid coat of beige, with white spots on the inside cheeks, and bumps in the back. This basically happened overnight which is another symptom of thrush. But I let it go on for 6 days before I saw her.

She said, "well, we could test it with a swab." I said okay. Then she never tested it!

She finally gave me (after me begging) a mouth rinse, Nystatin. I swish for 30 seconds then swallow, 4xday. The next day I had to go to the pharmacy for something else, and the pharmacist told me to take 8 acidophilus pills a day, which they had thank God. The the pharm. told me to take 4 a day when it's all clear just to make sure it didn't come back.

NEVER did the dimwit NP tell me about that stuff. You all did. The internet did. The pharmacist did. Grrrrr! I've always thought pharmacists knew more than doctors.

I'm on day two, a lot of the pain and burning is gone, but the layer of yuck is still on my tongue with a few sore spots & nasty raised bumps on the back of my tongue.

It takes 7-14 days to clear up if it's mild case, from my own research. SHE told me if it's not a lot better in a few days to call her. Riiiight.

The most awkward "doctor's" visit I ever had.

Forhgtgv, can you tell me more about your thrush?

Oakley, thrush is not the only thing that can cause these symptoms, so if it doesn't clear up, you may want to go back to see the doctor himself as the NP suggested, just to be sure. It is possible that the nurse practitioner was quiet because you already knew and said what you had. I am sure she wouoldn't want to argue with you. Once you got the presciption, the suggestion of acidolphilus may have seemed to be a moot point since that will often take care of the thrush on its own. No room for discussion there!

Anyway, glad a lot of the pain is gone and so quickly! Looks like whatever you have done is working.
