Deep counters and a range

I've pulled my cabinets three inches forward. Do I pull the range 3 inches forward and place a granite strip behind it?

It's a Wolf 30" DF with island trim. I called Wolf and talked with technical support. I also talked with the granite fabricator who is coming to take field measurements and discuss options today. Right now he has the plan from the kitchen center. I have options. I could do a narrower strip, anywhere from one to three inches wide.

Suggestions welcome from all. Anyone have this, and what did you do?

The range will likely be at least 2 inches deeper than the 24" counter (if not more). I had the same question about mine and ended up not putting anything there. There is a 1/2 inch space behind my Elextrolux Icon range and the wall but you can't see it at all..... The Wolf depth dimensions are probably pretty close to my Electrolux.

here's a photo. I don't think the Island trim was installed yet...

    Hope this helps.

Teresa, Is your range 36" and how deep are your counters at that point? AJ Madison shows the Wolf is 1" deeper than the Electolux Icon.

Thanks for the picture, it really helps. BTW, love your mural.

Yes. My range is 36". My counters (with the overhang) are about 28 1/2. My cabinets are 27 3/4 deep at that point.

    Hope this helps.

I'm doing the same thing. Cabinets will be 2'' deeper than usual (26''). The specs on my range say it is 25 3/8'' deep, 27 3/8'' including the door handle. I'm thinking/hoping it will be fine without anything behind it.

One other thing to consider...We have a rangetop, not a range, but we put a strip of stainless behind our rangetop because of deeper counters (also stainless). The thing I really like about it is that the back burners are not right up to the back wall. More room for pot handles and bigger pots, as well as a cleaner backsplash.

Oh my gosh rhome410! That's it. Don't know it you meant to explain yours or suggest the idea of stainless but here's an idea. I do want something back there but wasn't thrilled with the idea of the granite b/c it locks me in once I sign off on the document generated by the field measurements. My carpenter and I decided not to bring in the heavy range until after the granite is in so we lessen the risk to the floor and range itself. I've purchased just a sheet of stainless for behind the range until time and money allows for a tile field on the range wall.

If my carpenter puts up the 2X2 behind the range hole before the granite goes in then we should be able to build it up and place the stainless on the same plane as the granite. Now making those seams...or do I just do the granite b/c it's the same material?

The stainless will look like it's part of the range...So depends on how you want it to look, I think...Like the range is that deep or that it's surrounded by granite. We wrapped the substrate with the stainless so there were nice edges joining and so if anything dripped down in between.

Did you ever see the photo of the piece behind our rangetop? This is a little close, and it's obviously old without the grout in the tile, but it's the one I have already posted on photobucket:

Here's one from a little further back:

I don't know the answer, but would love to know what you decide in the end, since this is exactly the dilemma we will have if/when we replace our range (and exactly the range I am dreaming of getting, if we ever do! ;) There are some great ideas here and also in a thread from a few days ago.

Rhome, I don't believe I have seen those pictures before. Thank you, they ARE helpful. Your input has helped shape my kitchen. I'm the GC and the process is driven by my time (like you, I homeschool) and cash flow so it's slow but steady.

Artemis and anyone else interested: The field measure for my granite lasted 3 1/2 hours. No detail was too small to consider. My input was welcomed and my Ticor sinks with their templates were a big hit. My photos of examples, my printed specs on faucets, air switches, soap dispensers, and appliances were appreciated and used. He asked to keep the copies and marked them up with my requests. We went to the Wolf website and downloaded CAD drawings for his PC and he presented me with three options based on the downloads and the info from my call to tech. service. I asked his input and he gave his preferences in order. I chose his first preference both b/c it seemed logical and I respected his opinion. He's been doing this for 13 years but also has a full woodwork shop. BUT here is the kicker, I can change my mind after it is fabricated and installed. He is going to pull a small piece of the remnant granite so I could have a 'do-over' narrowing or widening the strip at no cost if I am not delighted. I could also have a stainless steel piece fabricated to go right over the granite if I dislike the look.

They weren't the cheapest but they come highly recommended and the fit felt right from the start. I will be surprised if I am disappointed with the final product. Oh, and now that he's seen the actual funky space, I go from 2 seams to 1 euroseam on the 'L' section that's more than an 'L'.

Sorry this is so long, I'm re-energized.

Sounds great! A wonderful relief, I'm sure. Can't wait to see the end result.
