Pool heat pump

To all the good guys out there. this includes Daddo and

havac. I've got this heat pump ( pool heater.) 3 ton,220a.c

1 ph. Delay on make, High side cut out, low side cut out,

thermal cut out ( stat ). Low pressure water cut out and high pressure cut out for the filter pump. Anyway, When the hydro goes out, and it goes out more often than i drink beer in the summer, the unit will NEVER restart unless i shut down the power and restart. YES ive checked

the voltage. It is everywhere including the compressor.

Go figure. I know they use a special compressor, maybe it is internal with the compressor ? This heat pump will heat a 22,000 gallon pool to 100F. if i let it. One hell of a

hot tub. So, Any ideas ? The factory hasn't a clue, I've

called them.

Forgot to mention. This is not a test or a trick. No one
has an answer. Everyone says " It has a lock out ". It
doesn't have a lock out as we know it. It must have something because it doesn't start unless you power down
and power up. Doesn't make a difference 1/2 hour or 10 seconds. i've done both. Have a good weekend to all.
My heart and soul goes out to the poor people that got flooded in texas. been there got the T shirt. It's this side of hell. Those poor people.

Thats a real stumper kalining,,, did you try maybe working on it sober?!!! Just kidding,:-) Its a strain on the memory but I seem to remember back in the last century working on a funky piece of equipment that heated pool water and also dehumidified. There was something about a special type of HP control that was normally open. It closed when the head reached the controls default set point and then energized a relay which held off the control circuit. It was a series parallel circuit though and its been to long to picture it in my head now. Don't know if that helps, I'm just babbling here. Wish I could grab a meter and head on up to TS that thing with you.you're to smart for me to ask the usual dumb questions like it it drawing high amps etc.? See here in NH we have a different type of pool heater' We actually have swimming ools, and if its to cold you just had your own p! ;-)

I know that if this works it would still be treating the sympom and not the disease as your problem sounds like it's in the control circiut. However, might a 'whole house surge & lightning protector' mounted at the load center control panel help? It's a good idea to have this installed anyway.

    Just a thought.

That was my biggest problem. I did check it when i was sober :)
Well gentlemen i owe you a thousand pardons. I found out
why this pump needs to be reset after a power outage. It does have a lockout. I just rechecked it again, nothing else to do. It has a dual voltage T stat. 220 - 24. The 220
side has a lock out built into the stat and shuts down the
24 volt side which shuts down the contactor which shuts down the compressor. The 220 side stays open shutting down the fans until reset. I should have known better. It's the same system used on commercial units but this one is mechanical and very well hidden in a protective box under the run cap. Most commercials use electronic boards and you just throw them away and put in a new one. Being that this is my pump and it heats my water and i don't pay myself to look at it i just let it do it's thing. I just wanted to know why it locks out. I found out. Thanks for the replies. Sure appreciate it and sorry for picking your brains. I should have looked harder and spent more time on it. Sorry for all the trouble.

No problem at all greg, I'm curious now though, how does a power outage open the safety circuit? How does it distinguish between a loss of power and just shutting it down for service? Does that mean after you work on it and turn it back on you have to turn it back off again to reset the lockout?

I haven't figured that one out yet. No one has asked that
question. Now you got me thinking. I think i might have an
answer. Going to pick my own brain. ( 5 minuets later ).
I've got it. No. The unit can't tell the difference from a
power outage and a shut down for repairs. It goes into lock
out if the power is interupted regardless if there is a power outage from hydro or i shut it off for repairs. It then powers up after i reset the power no matter how the power was interrupted but i have to wait for it to equilize
so there must be another switch built into the high side
switch locking out the restart until the hydro is reset. Remember that when a system is worked on you don't
usually turn it back on in 15 seconds. Some people i know
don't get their systems turned back on for 3 days. I did
some more thinking. Disregard most of what i said. I do remember that if the hydro goes out over night the unit
could be off for 8 hours until i reset it. It may have
continues duty solinoid connected to the t stat ? Actually
i've gotten reved up now. This thing is becoming a quest.
If i shut the unit down at the breaker for service it will
fire up no problem when the breaker is turned back on. If the hydro goes out and comes back on 2 - 4 - 8 hours later
the unit will never come back on unless i reset it. I've
got to go back and figure this thing out. I want to know.
Yes it does not make sense but that is how it works.
( ten minuets later ). I'VE GOT IT. I think. Did some more thinking and had another beer. This pump is 40 feet away from the service panel in the garage with 100 feet of #14
hard wire. I think this is what happends. Hydro goes out.
Hydro comes back on. Massive surge in the home. The extention wire to the compressor goes into brown out and
locks out again shutting down the pump. When i reset the
power the compressor gets full voltage and power. Ergo the
unit works just fine. What do you think ? I think this may be the problem. Anyone else ? Chime in at anytime. Yes im
the typical poster. Forgetting to post all the info so
everyone has to guess. Sorry about that. That is like a
poster that can't get the car started. Everyone says everything including replace the engine but the poster forgot to tell everyone they ran out of gas. This is becoming a novel. Have a good weekend to all.
