Corner Pantry people -- how big???

So, I really, really want a pantry closet (many of you have seen my attempts at finding a spot for one). Ideally, it will be in a corner so that it doesn't stick out too much into the room. Will 48'' X 48'' give me a decent pantry, or do I need to go to 60'' X 60''? The bigger size pantry sounds nice, but it really cuts into my cabinet/counter space.

In case you haven't read my MANY posts struggling with my layout, my kitchen is 16'X14'

Oh, that's good to hear! How wide is your door? Don't suppose you have any pictures (I don't mind if it's a bit messy -- would actually help me get an accurate picture of what MINE will look like, lol). I was hoping to do deeper shelves on the bottom (below counter height) for bulk items, and narrow shelves the rest of the way up for all of my, plus some REALLY narrow shelves (maybe 8") thrown in the mix for cans/spices/oils/etc.

Remember that you will have to reach over the lower shelves and then lean in to get to the narrower shelves above. Why not have one side with, say 15" or 18" shelves for your bulk items & small appliances (was that the missing item in your last post?) and 12" on the other side for canned goods, etc.

    Good idea. Thanks, buehl.

My friend is having her home build right now and that is what the builders put in 48x48". Mine is in the midst of being built and it is 47"x47" because of a window & range. I'm drywalling & mudding and I have plenty of room for me & the ladder so it shouldn't be much difference once my 15" shelves are in.......and I'm not a petite woman LOL.

So when you say 48X48, is that interior space, or does it include the drywall, too? Does anyone have any pictures of a corner pantry that I can take a look at? Inside (for shelving ideas) and outside (for door/wall angle ideas) would be most welcome!!!

I'll measure........I don't remember. I'm far from done but I can take a pic of "in progress" and give you all the dimensions if you like : )

Thanks, saskatchewan girl. That would be a big help!

if you go to the finished kitchen blogs and look up soupgirl's kitchen, there's a picture of the corner walk-in pantry but unfortunately, it's a video instead of still pictures, which makes the viewing difficult. My son-in-law took the video and got so much pleasure out of surprising me with it that I never had the heart to tell him that still pictures would have worked better. One of these days, I'll treat myself to a video camera and reshoot them.

The pantry door is 24" wide, which I have found to be adequate for my purposes. If you make the shelves wider towards the bottom, limit the wider shelves to one wall only and I wouldn't go any wider than 15". Part of the utility of the pantry is the ability to stand in the middle of the pantry and see everything at a glance. As such, you want to leave a center space where you can stand comfortably. If you have an item that is wider than 15" to store in the pantry, you may wish to see if that item can fit on the floor under the last shelf, perhaps in the corner.

Oh, good point, soupgirl. I will definitely check out the pictures. For bulk storage, I am mainly thinking things like the jumbo paper towel packs, sodas, and water from Costco, which I will want to store low, anyway, so that there's not a lot of lifting involved. Everything else will be for the narrower shelves, and I want to include at least one area with 1-can depth shelves for cans/bulk size spices and oils.

This is a 48 X 48 pantry with a 2 foot door. I took the pics at my sisters, she likes her door activated light switch and dislikes the wire shelves (hence the cardboard liners on some).

This is our roughed in pantry. I didn't measure the outside, too difficult but the inside is 46 3/4 x 46 3/4 with 1/2" drywall and 2x4 construction. Door openning is 26 1/4 x 82 1/4 roughed in.

We have the light switch & plug in inside on the right. We purchased a motion switch 150 degrees because of the funky corner inside. The shelves won't go all the way around because I want 1 wall open (rt side) to hang swiffer, broom etc

Big bump to ask another corner pantry question. When planning the corner pantry, how do you measure to determine where to put the island, that is, do I measure diagonally from the corner of the island to the center of the corner pantry door, or do I measure from the pantry wall in a stright line? How much distance do I need between pantry and island? I would like 2 small double doors in the pantry instead of one 24" door.

Bumping ... to keep this from falling off the forum. May have good info for new GWrs.

I'm laying out a kitchen and looking at a roughly 4' x 4' corner pantry space-- has anyone put in a door that opens and then slides into the wall (like a tv cabinet, or a cabinet that hides a microwave under the counter, I don't know what they are called... they open on a hinge and then pivot and slide out of sight.)? You could also have two one foot doors instead of one 24" one?

Gosh, I hope someone knows what I'm talking about!
