Parental controls on iPad

DD, almost 12, would like an iPad Mini for either Christmas or her birthday. Since she (so far) doesn't want anything else, I am considering it (even though my initial response was no!). If you have a kid with an iPad, have you set parental controls that will ensure that s/he doesn't stumble onto inappropriate sites? I'm obviously not tech savvy, and even when I look at the settings on my own iPad, I'm confused!

I've linked an article below that you might find helpful.

I'm so untechy I can't believe I am commenting, but maybe someone else can explain what I'm about to say. My DH has linked up his computer somehow so that the texting program (possibly FaceTime?) my DD uses on her iPod and the family iPad shows up on his computer. She rec'd a text from a girl she met at camp and my DH saw the unfamiliar name immediately and checked it out. You may not want her using texting features, but it's been my experience that they will find a way to use them, so you might as well be in on it.

Of course I will. I mean to protect the children from bad sites and porn pictures, it is possible.

The biggest pronlem is our inability to prevent what they see on their friends devices. Not every parent ( by a long shot, i fear) will censor their kids phones, ipads, etc. It is a big, ugly. world out there f. Cannot keep our children as innocent for long anymore. I hate it, but there it is. Light porn has become pervasive and accepted.: witness the large display at Costco last summer of Shades og Grey....as if were an ordinaty bestseller. Sure kid, come on Over and flip thru some psges. Gad! I feel, likensuch a priude these days.
Back to op: yep, get the controls we can at least be vigilant for our own.

Martinca, so totally true! My kids do not have unlimited access to the internet at home. No computers in their rooms, Mac is in the living room in plain view and laptop never leaves the family room or kitchen. My oldest, 13 y/o dd, got an iTouch for Christmas in 6th grade. The internet is turned off so she can't access it unless I put my password in (she never asks, if she wants to go online, she uses the Mac or laptop) and the iTunes account is password protected with my password as we all share the same account for songs, etc. If she wants to download an app, I have to put my password in. She is a good kid and I don't really worry yet about what she might try to get into but as she gets older, there is definitely more that needs monitoring but it's harder to do. Several of her friends have iPhones, so there is nothing I can do about it even when they are in my own home, unless I were to collect phones. Thankfully, her group of friends, while I'm sure not completely innocent, are not into boys yet beyond pining for One Direction, even though there are girls her age that are already "dating" and doing things with boys.

But yes, it scares me a little knowing I can't control what happens beyond my own home. Last year, there was a scandal when some 8th grade girls, while at a sleepover, took pictures of themselves in their underwear and then texted the pictures to some boys, who then sent the pictures out to a wide group of kids at various private schools in the area. When I heard who some of the girls were it didn't surprise me as the parents in that "clique" are known for lack of supervision (not that even I could have prevented such a stupid thing w/o confiscating phones every time my dd has friends over, but these girls are known for being able to do all kinds of things I wouldn't allow my dd to do).

Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic!

Thanks for the input, everyone! She has now decided she wants a camera instead, which is a better idea IMO!

LOL, Sue, don't you hate when kids do that?! Well, better now than after you got the iPad. And yes, the camera is a great idea! My 13 y/o got one last year and loves it.

For additional parental controls try www.opendns.com. It is used by many schools to control access. I've been using it for about a year and it works well. The access is controlled through your router, so all computers on your network, including wireless, will be monitored. You can block access by categories (nudity, violence, etc) or by individual domain names. I started using this when my "innocent" teen started to look up some questionable material on the web. The stuff that is out there for kids to easily find and see is truly disgusting. When researching some of the sites my teen had checked out I was shocked at what was out there ...

I would suggest you install the program, but don't block anything at first. Let it run for a week or so and check the reports to see what is being accessed by the kids/teens. Then have the discussion and place the blocks. I found out one of my neighbors was accessing porno through one of our unlocked wireless routers. Fixed that quickly, but now I look at all my neighbors in a different light and wonder which one has a questionable hobby!

You could try to install an iPad monitoring software on his phone.
