Your shopping help needed please.

Earlier today dh took four boxes to the UPS store; all are prepaid returns to major retailers who mislabeled on their website, or misrepresented in emails, the Country of Origin on things I ordered. 90% of the stuff was made in China but advertised as made elsewhere, including in the USA. I don't mean to start a debate about whether it's a good thing to avoid purchasing Chinese-made products. Please accept that in our family we have deeply felt convictions based on personal experiences.

Here's my most pressing shopping problem: I need to find some men's casual shoes (black leather) for Any other recommendations would be welcome, too, especially for kitchen gadgets and small electronics.

Thanks!

Yours is an interesting post rockmanor, I like it but more than that I respect it. Hat's off to you.

I did a search and found this website, are you familiar with it already? It may have what you're looking for, I hope so anyways. Good luck - Lukki

You could try Bluefly or Smartbargains for shoes. I've seen a lot that were made in Italy.

Maybe Google shoes Italian. It could provide links to some that are under $150.

Allen Edmonds shoes are made in the US. I don't know if you can find a pair for under $150, but there's always sales.

A lot of shoes are made in Brazil, I would look for that.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. I found some great links on that website, Lukkiirish! Parma and Bumblebeez, shoes from Italy or Brazil would be fine if I can find something that will suit ds. Allen Edmunds shoes are terrific, Ideefixe, but most are probably more the style and (new) price point suited for dh. I'm checking sales in hopes of surprising dh with a pair. We're reconciled to paying significantly more than we're used to for most things, and will just be satisfied with reduced quantity.

If anyone runs across some black leather slip-ons, please post. Ds has asked for a pair for Christmas, since his workplace dress code is business casual all of the time and not just on Fridays. I've been luckier finding both Munro American and New Balance (a few styles, anyway) for myself. If only I didn't have wide hobbit feet and bunions, it would be easier to fit into European shoes that don't offer different widths.

    Thanks again!

rockmanor - I always thought a store that was filled with 'american made' only products would be fabulous. Bet they would give WM a run for the money!

Thank you, lukkiirish, for the link. I'm going to save it and hopefully do all my Christmas shopping (and beyond) from the stores listed here. I truly had no idea we still had so many American manufacturers. I have no big beef with any country, just would rather my money stay here and help out our fellow countrymen, especially in this economy.

So glad it helped! I believe Merrill shoes are American made as well. They can be a bit pricey, but boy are they wonderful!!

Here is another directory of goods made in the USA.

It turns out that Merrell does (proudly) manufacture some of its shoes in China, as well as India, Vietnam and elsewhere. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to determine which models are made where.

Meanwhile, a pair of shoes advertised as made in the USA was just dropped off at UPS for return after I found that the inside tag stated Made in China. The retailer wasn't going to provide a prepaid return label until I mentioned their liability for false advertising. I think the FTC takes a dim view of stores that plaster big red, white and blue "Made in USA" signs on ads for merchandise not made here.

Southern Vesta, thanks for that link!
