Columns under counter?

We have a half wall that is between our kitchen and living areas. There is a bar at the top of the wall that extends out a foot (total 16"). The bar is higher than the actual kitchen counter too it has its own counterspace that it is supporting. The wall is only a 4" wall and the sink plumbing and a vacuum pan run behind it. The piping for the vacumm drilled out a significant portion of the lumber in the wall. My husband is concerned that the wall is seriously weak. The bar counter needs support so as to not sag or rip apart the wall but there may not be enough strength or mass in the lumber in the wall to place a traditional bracket or corbel. I was thinking of maybe putting a few columns of some sort of trim to help support the counter from the floor. There won't be any stools at this location, the counter was just a way to dress up the pass through really, so there won't be an issue of the columns hindering functionality. It's a "lean on" bar at most. Has anyone seen anything like this? I'm afraid it will look goofy at first but I imagine I'd get used to it.
