Coleman central air conditioner reviews?

I am getting central air retrofitted in my house, as I posted about in a previous thread. The air conditioner will be outside with the air handler in the attic along with all the ductwork, since my house has none. Anyhow, the contractor suggested the Coleman LX series Mid-Efficiency Air Conditioner with R-410A Refrigerant. It's has 14.5 SEER rating. I know nothing of the quality of air conditioners. I'm assuming Coleman is not the best like Trane or Carrier, but I also probably cannot afford the best anyway. Just want to make sure Coleman is a good brand with a good history...

This is an old post, but providing an update. Would like people to know my experience with Coleman air conditioning. In short, their air handler has been nothing but problems from the very beginning, and Coleman has refused To help solve. Very disappointed in this company.

Roughly 5 yrs ago we had a licensed, reputable AC company install a completely new Coleman AC system in our house. Unfortunately, every year, the circuit board in the air handler would break down and require replacement. It has been replaced at least 4 times now. Our technician has taken several other steps, as directed by Coleman, to try and troubleshoot and resolve the issue over these years, none of which helped. It really comes down to this air handler being a lemon. Our technician has tried to get Coleman to be helpful and cooperate and understand that he has done everything possible to fix, yet, he has stated that, "Coleman is unwilling to to pay any of the labor or anything for that matter".

This is extremely dissappointing from a customer service standpoint. The history of the Coleman company seems to have a little bearing on who they are now.

From what I understand that is the same as Luxaire and York. I own the Luxaire mid effieciency 14.5 seer heatpump. You'll be happy. Its a nice piece of equipment. Its quiet. Its efficient. You will be pleased. Make sure you get the LX 14.5 seer model and not a lower model. This model has a jacket around the compressor to make it quiet.

My ductwork and airhandler are in the basement. Not familiar with having vents in attic. I suppose its your only option.

What part of the country are you in? How do you heat? Maybe you should spend a few hundred more and upgrade to the heatpump model.

Thanks for the response. That's good to hear the positive review. I am definitely planning on the 14.5 SEER.

I am in Madison, WI. I have radiant baseboard heating, which is why the everything will run through the attic, since I have no ducts through the home.

I assume you will place air handler in attic.make certain system qualifies for tax credit. I would want a var speed air handler. and if you have reasonable electric rate, you might even consider the HP condenser mdl that will handle your home's heating needs in your area/climate's shoulder mths.

heat pump version of that model shouldn't cost more than a few hundred more than the A/C for the condensor. You would need heat strips in the air-handler also. The thermostat would need upgraded also. Shouldn't be a big deal.

The heatpump would definetly be nice in fall and spring when temperatures are above freezing. The heatpump also comes in handy incase nat. gas spikes again.

I hate to be late to the “party” so to speak, But yeah DONT GET A CHEAP COLEMAN AC UNIT, maybe one out of 10 work fine for more than 5yrs, the rest Have issues with either the coils leaking constantly or the motors and electronIva boards giving out. I’ve noticed this with the more inexpensive models of colemans, however their top of the line models have a decent reputation although I myself can not attest to that as I haven’t had much experience with them. Sorry pal, annother one bites the dust

For good air conditioner, it is not necessary a popular brand... You can have a top brand but if you does not care the system the problems are the same.
