I think it all depends on the size of your house, neighborhood, and expectations of buyers in your area. A local real estate expert could give you the best advice on this. In my area (historic houses) it would be a complete waste of money as most laundry areas are in finished or unfinished basements. In a neighborhood with newer upscale homes and laundry areas generally on the ground floor, it might be a feature that would get a good return on investment.

I think it would be a great investment and you will probably recoup much of it. Storage is one of the primary features that sells houses. We have added several such rooms during remodels and the clients love them.

We just had our retirement home completed and when designing it we had a very large laundry/storage room included. It is 9' x 32'. It is on the main floor between breezeway and kitchen. Our thought process is that as we get older, we want everything we use, even only once in a while, handy. No stairs to climb or storage rooms to dig thru. We have not gotten to use it yet but already love it and know that it will be one of the most used rooms in the house. It has two 8' enclosed closets, in addition to built in cabinets above and below large sink and above and around washer dryer area. Also plenty of room for extra fridge and freezer. Well worth doing.

You could save some money on cabinetry if you have more open storage, but it seems a bit strange to have a wine fridge in the 'laundry' room.

@Dytecture ..... because the 'laundry room' is directly behind the kitchen, and there is a 36" doorway to the laundry/butler's pantry (extra kitchen storage) with view from the kitchen & living room .... therefore with over 10' of counter space, why not use the 'visible' area as a bar set up & have a small frig instead of a base cabinet. That's why a wine frig! Easy access, nice 'view' and I will put glass doors on the wall cabinet above the wine frig. I think the more storage, the better and there is a great deal of open space in the house. There is no window, so natural light must stream in from the kitchen, which has huge windows and lots of sunshine, therefore, not a good place to store wine!
@Fenny .... The house is about 2400 sq feet, on a lake in a small but delightful touristy town. Sadly, I have found that instead of thinking outside the box and remodeling to get all the features that our lifestyles want now, people just build! Do my neighbors have this feature? No, but my house is more for entertaining or retreat, and for me it is a summer home at this point.
@cfox2 Yes, I agree! A laundry room should be on the 'main' floor and not hauling stuff up & down. This is on the main floor. If I were building from scratch, I may put laundry near the bedrooms.
